The sun dipped below the horizon, casting shadows over the empty streets. Normally, the nightfall would bring more corpse activity, but tonight, the city was eerily still. Perhaps the horde had moved on, searching for something, or someone else.

Ryujin's arm draped lazily over Yeji's shoulders while they made their way back across the bridge toward the Humvee. The day had come to an end. Their so-called "family fun day" doubled as a supply run that yielded no supplies. But none of them minded. Their backpacks were empty, yet their hearts were full, and that was enough.

"What's for dinner?" Lia asked, stretching her arms with a tired yawn.

Seulgi chuckled, glancing at the sky painted in hues of orange and violet. "We've got potatoes in the garden. We can roast them over the fire, maybe throw some jerky on top."

Just as Lia opened her mouth to complain about eating potatoes again, she collided with Yuna's back.

"What the fuck—" she hissed, rubbing her nose.

The younger one didn't react. Instead, her posture had gone rigid, fingers curling around the handle of the knife at her waist. "Who the fuck is there?" she whispered.

The group instinctively reached for their weapons. Seulgi's fingers brushed the gun tucked in her waistband, eyes locked on the distant figures ahead.

Across the bridge, lights flickered to life around their Humvee.

Seulgi's voice was barely audible. "Don't let them see us—"

Before she could finish, a blinding spotlight flooded their vision.

"Hands up and walk slowly!" A voice boomed through a megaphone, cutting through the air like a blade.

Yuna's fingers flexed over her knife, eyes darting to Seulgi for direction.

"Shit," Ryujin muttered under her breath.

Yeji's hand brushed against hers. A silent question. A silent answer.

They had no choice.

Slowly, one by one, they raised their hands, stepping forward into the unknown.

Ryujin's heart pounded with her hands raised. Fingers twitching slightly. One wrong move, and this could be the end of everything.

The others fell in line beside her.

She swallowed hard. Stay calm. Steady.

Her grip ached for her weapon, but she knew better. Who knew what was behind those bright lights? They were outgunned, outnumbered– whoever these people were, they had the advantage. And Ryujin wasn't about to risk losing anyone. Not Yeji. Not her family.

But who were they? Military? A gang like those teenagers at the train station? A cult like the ones in the woods.

A part of her wanted to run, to bolt back to the theatre where she was living in a dream.

"I'm scared," Yeji whispered, her voice barely audible.

"I know, love," Ryujin murmured, her grip tightening around the other's hand. "I won't let anything take you away from me."
