Kashvi-
" Bhabhi, is this correct?" Sam's voice caught my attention, interuppting me every five minutes.
I turned around and moved the flat end through the mixture, the chickpea flour roasted and crunchy sizzling in pure ghee which I might say he added extra saying ' the more the better'.
Idiot.
I gave him a thumbs-up ," add the sugar now, and keep stirring it ," I mumbled while he gave me a proud smile which came for himself only.
"Bhai is gonna love this. Haa! When we were kids he used to steal all the besan ladoos from my share and gobble them down in one go," he shared the memory which made my lips curl up.
" And imagine his face when we'll surprise him with this birthday party!" Advika's voice boomed in the kitchen as she entered with an inflated balloon.
I continued making the round baati's from the prepared dough , the smell of roasted carrot seeds surrounding me infusing with the aroma of the ghee.
Outside , I could hear Divya mumbling something about the decoration which made us laugh
No matter how much she bantered with Rahul over little things, she was thrilled to celebrate his birthday . Not just that , in fact she was fretting about it. She wanted everything literal perfect.
"Bhabhi, ye aake dekho na isko," I sighed finished my last bati , glad cause Sam wouldn't let me do my work without distraction.
I went and checked the mixture, grabbing the grated coconut I added it in the mixture ensuring it covered the whole thing.
After it was done I transferred it to a bowl keeping it aside.
" Now we'll shape ladoos before it turns cold," I mumbled grabbing some ghee in small bowl but before I could begin mom appeared in the kitchen.
" Give me that Kashvi, I and Sam will do that , you prepare the rest ,"
I smiled at her grateful for the help instantly putting the boiling water on the stove carrying on my process of making dal- baati.
We all wanted to make it special for Rahul , especially after knowing that his parents lived in US and he had some strained relationship with them. He had no family here except for all of us, and we were going to make sure he felt the happiest today.
So we were making his favourites.
Divya had informed me that since he's in Indore, Dal-bati was like his most favourite dish and cause I could make it well I offered.
" Done with the decor!" She sighed grabbing a water bottle and leaning against the counter.
" Yes, you should come and see once," I smiled and nodded .
The whole living was decorated with balloons, flower, glittered papers and what not.
In the center there was a huge Happy birthday Rahul catching the attention.
I smiled happily taking in all the details of the decor, I could already imagine his squeal in a girlish voice .
" I still want to throw a big party ," mom laughed , making Divya and Advika's shoulder drop.
" Is it that bad?"
She shook her head instantly." Not at all, it's fine and it's good. Just the family and homely people. You know I said just cause we have a thing for big celebrations ,"
I sighed shaking my head striding back in the kitchen.
All the preparations were done, and now we were just waiting for the birthday boy.
I adjusted the pleats of my black saree, giving myself a last look in the nearby mirror and walking towards the couch when footsteps echoed and we glanced at each other in excitement.
