'Mona, Mona, Mona!'
'Sorry what?'
Victoria rolled her eyes, giving her a suspicious look.
'You're doing it again.'
Mona rose her head, staring at Vic bewilderedly.
'What am I doing?'
Vic laughed, leaning over and resting a tanned hand on her shoulder.
'Zoning out.'
'You really like this Blue...guy don't you? You still haven't told me about what happened after Homecoming.'
Mona sat in silence until she gave in to her impatience.
'Fine. We kissed. Again. He had the place decorated for me and everything. It was very....'
'Romantic?'
Mona shook her head in disgust.
'Gross. No. I hate romance.'
Victoria giggled at her childishness, picking up the pink champagne bottle on the desk in front of her and pouring in two glasses.
'You're lucky you got tan enough so no one can notice how red you're getting.' She commented as she picked up a glass and handing it over to Mona.
Mona furrowed her brows, taking a small sip from her glass.
'Whatever. It's complicated anyway.'
'Not really? You just call it official.'
'Not exactly an option at the moment. I took your whole 'game' advice and told him that I didn't want to date until I turned sixteen.'
Victoria choked on her drink, putting it down in front of her.
'What the hell?! You think he'll still be interested? News flash, he's a teenage boy! And didn't you say he was even interested in Karai at one point?'
Mona gulped nodding slowly.
'Difference is, Leo is the biggest dork I have ever known, but he is also my best friend so he understands where I'm coming from. This summer actually made an impact on me and I finally know who I am again.'
Victoria raised her glass, smirking deviously.
'And this summer proves the fact that we're clearly top bitches anywhere we go. So a toast, to new beginnings and to a soon to be fabulous comeback. Junior year here we come.'
Their glasses clinked loudly, the girls giving each other reassuring looks. Mona began to stare out the window as she downed her beverage slowly.
'I have a good feeling about this year. No more burdens being left around.'
'Preach it sister.'
Mona quickly glanced at Vic, smiling sheepishly. She turned away, her smile fading away quickly.
'But I guess I wasn't the only one carrying the burden.''Welcome home!'
Mona was welcomed with balloons and confetti trapping her and her luggage at the doorway. She used a free hand to move the balloons out of the way, eventually being trapped again by a circle of hugs.
'I've missed you guys so much.'
Derek kissed her on the forehead as her brother and mom went to help with her suitcases. Derek rose an eyebrow, fiddling with Mona's newly dyed hair.
'So you're a blonde now? And very tanned.'
Mona scoffed, flipping her hair to the side.
'It's ombré, dad. And yes, it's a metaphor. I've changed in moral terms, but I'm still the same girl I was when I left.' She gestured to each half of her hair as she spoke.
'But now I think I'll need to wear brown contacts. My eyes pop out way too much now.'
Leo snorted, making his way up to the staircase.
'New year new me!' He mocked.
Mona stuck her tongue out at him before she grabbed a bag and made her way upstairs. She grabbed her luggage off Leo as she made her way to her room. She skipped inside and left the luggage at the door, jumping onto her bed and taking her phone out her pocket. She pressed a few buttons putting her phone on speaker and walking back over to her stuff, beginning to unpack.
'Hello?'
'I'm back beeetch!'
'Nice to hear from you Mo.'
'Did you miss me?'
'Didn't even notice you were gone.'
Mona could detect the sarcasm in his voice, which made her laugh.
'Funny. Real funny. Now I would love to tell you all about my summer but there's no way I could do that over the phone.'
'Alright. When are you available?'
'In like 2 hours.'
'Alright. Meet me at the skatepark, there's somewhere I want to take you.'
'Fine. I'll see you soon.'
She waited for him to hang up, so she could begin to scream her head off. Mona bounced around the room, jumping on the bed. Her mother opened the door, puzzled at the commotion.
'You alright dear?'
Mona stood on the bed, smiling broadly at her mother.
'He just asked me out. Well technically he didn't say those exact words but he basically did I mean like I just got back and omigosh I can't even-' she spoke at such a rapid tone Mona herself couldn't understand what she was saying. She collapsed onto the bed, rolling around and singing loudly.
Liberty narrowed her eyes, making her way over to Mona.
'So who's he?'
'Can't I have some secrets mom?'
Liberty agreed reluctantly.
'You haven't been this tongue tied since Ivy.'
Mona frowned slightly, sitting up and staring at the ceiling.
'He just means a hell a lot to me.'
'Then why don't you just...say that?'
Mona chuckled, leaning on Liberty's shoulder.
'It's complicated.'
'Well I hope the complications are worth it at the end.'
'Me too.'
