Chapter 11.
The Academy had a lovely treat for us come Friday evening. The quirky headmaster showed up in the Middle House while we were having dinner, bearing good news. We were given a chance to go home on Saturday to our families. It has been weeks since class started and she felt that it was time to unwind from the island, our studies, and the VR environment.
Before everyone went back to their dormitories, Red pulled me aside. She had a reminder. Never tell anyone about the Academy. Based from her tone and the flash in her eyes, Blue didn't inform her that my sister Bernadette, an outsider, knew of the Academy by now. It was my little secret with Blue. If Red found out, there would be repercussions. I had to protect my friend.
By Saturday morning, I found myself back in the States, jittery with excitement. It has been a while since I've seen my sister. We've been in contact since Blue provided us the opportunity. However, it would be nice to hug Bern for real and see how she was doing. There was also the problem about our parents. I would have to inquire about their health and state of mind. That part I was dreading the most. They might still hate me.
While waiting for the vending machine to dispense my soda, I spotted someone in the distance. Chestnut hair. Beauty that stood out from the crowd. "Alya," I whispered under my breath. She was standing still in the middle of the busy airport, clad in blue cardigan, peach frilly skirt, and heels. Wow. The soda that I was patiently waiting for clanged down from the machine. It barely registered in my head as I made my way to her.
Though Alya's eyes were hidden behind her aviator sunglasses, I could still detect the surprise that crossed her face. "Mars." She glanced around, as if expecting to see someone with me. When she found none, her head turned back in my direction. "Are you going home to your family?"
My heart was overwhelmed with joy. She was talking to me. It was just us. Sure there were thousands of travelers waiting for their flight. Some were walking around us, talking excitedly about the places they would visit, the things they would see. And sure some students of the Academy might be lurking somewhere, wondering why I was talking to their Princess. But to me it felt like we were the only ones occupying this place and period in time.
"I'm going to call my sister and tell her that we should meet," I said to her. "As for the rest of my family. I don't think I'll be seeing them anytime soon."
She removed her sunglasses. Oh hello there hazel eyes. Something stirred in my gut. "Sounds lovely" Her gaze went behind me. She was distracted.
"It's none of my business, but are you waiting for someone?" Lilith's grey eyes disrupted my thoughts. "Oh. You're probably looking for Lilith." Mars, you didn't need to sound disappointed. Sigh.
She chuckled. "What? No, I wasn't doing that. I sent my guards on an errand. My parents forbade them to leave my side, but I insisted that they find this special flavor of ice cream that probably didn't exist." She bit her bottom lip. "I wanted to be alone for a while before returning to my house. The maids will be all over me there."
"I'm bothering you then."
"Not at all. And it's a welcome distraction."
I wanted to keep the conversation going. At least until the guards have returned. "What flavor of ice cream did you ask for?"
"Avocado." She tried to keep a straight face. "With a dash of Kahlua and a hint of chili."
A smile broke from both our faces. "It's been a while since I've seen you like this." her expression turned quizzical. "Whenever I see you in the Academy, you're always so serious or sad. I always wondered what happened to you to have such expression on your face."
