Chapter 29.
Life never pauses for anyone. Only people do. The Academy was business as usual days after the ball. After ruling out the possibility of foul play for the death of Trish, everyone breathed a sigh of relief and continued with their activities. They weren't unemotional androids who shrugged it off completely. But students were glad that the Academy was still safe. That Trish wasn't a victim of somebody's wrath or attempts to bring down the school, but her own circumstances.
Red, Candice, and I had a different opinion. As per our last talk, we were determined to keep it low while searching for the cause of Trish death. We were convinced that it could be a ploy by the Druids or someone malevolent to destroy our happy little world. And who better to start the investigation with than our other friends? Everyone was guilty until proven innocent. Red told me that we should abide by this rule for now, bad as it seemed.
When I thought hard about the day of the ball, before Trish died, everyone I was close to except Red and Candice were nowhere to be found. I wasn't with Blue. Alya wasn't seen by the other students. Lilith ran off. El didn't attend the ball at all. I didn't want to doubt any of them. However, I wanted to be sure that they were as innocent as I knew they'd be. As Red and Candice said, make sure to trim our friends first so we'd know who to trust.
By Monday afternoon, Blue asked me to meet with her after classes. She had something important to talk about. I saw it as an opportunity to exclude her from the suspect list. "Hey beautiful," Blue said. Her next words as well as her footsteps were drowned by the splash of the wave. She asked me to meet by the beach side. A change of scenery, she said.
Blue was wearing jeans and a white and blue striped shirt. Her jeans were rolled up to her knees, and she was barefoot as she strolled to me. I was sitting next to a rock, knees drawn to my chest. The white sand was warm and soft, perfect for resting on. I didn't bother to bring a blanket.
"What took you so long, slowpoke?" I asked as she sank next to me. Her hair was windswept now. She didn't bother to tuck it behind her ears or pull it up in a ponytail like I did with mine.
"You were early," she defended with a smile. "I was right on time. See?" She showed me her watch. She arrived on the dot as usual. Almost everyone in the Academy were obsessive with time and numbers. I wasn't any different.
"And here I'm thinking that I can make you do anything I want in exchange for being late." I took a small shell on the sand. "Too bad."
She smirked. "I always do what you want anyway. Isn't that enough?" I didn't smile at her. Blue was sweet. More so than the average. A seed of doubt bloomed in my head. Guilty until proven innocent. Was it Blue's way of hiding her true self? A sadistic cult member who wanted to kill us all. My stomach churned at the thought. How could I imagine such a thing from her?
"Do you mind if I ask a personal question? How long have you known Red?"
"A while. You have to ask her the exact years of our friendship. She's always mad when I give out a personal information about us."
"I see." I toyed with the shell. It was smooth on one side and jagged on the edges. "How about your parents? Your childhood? Please tell me more about it."
Blue glanced around until she saw a larger shell. She placed it against her ears before answering my question. "My parents are what you can call nobility. Our roots can be traced in England and Western Europe." She dropped the shell on the sand. "We have properties in those places, but personally I prefer to reside in the States where I can concentrate on my hobbies. I've been living there since I was fifteen."
"By hobbies, I hope you're talking about robots and such."
She gave me a quizzical look. "What else am I going to be interested in?"
