Chapter 32. Conditions
Learning was fun and all, but sticking to a serious curriculum could kill someone. Literally. My simple analogy pertaining this involved Jack and the saying that 'All work and no play made Jack a dull boy.' And what did Jack do to get fun? He rode the Titanic and died. See how that went for him? I bet the Academy would laugh at my way of thinking, but they did believe that being cooped in an island, no matter how technologically advanced it was wouldn't play out well.
Over the weekend, it was announced through mail to all students that everyone would have a week off. No exception. This meant that we should go home to our families in different parts of the globe and do whatever we wanted. Consider it a gift, the email said. To me it was more of a sentence. I had no one to return to except my sister. And she didn't exactly have a place of her own.
The day before the break, I was seated on my bed, watching Jade dump her things inside her luggage. She groaned when the zipper refused to close. "After spending thousands of bucks on this useless crap, you'd think that it would fit more," she said with a frown. Jade desperately sat on the luggage to help it close. It didn't.
"If you remove some of your hair products, maybe it will stay put," I said. "What do you need all those hair spray for, and where are you headed to anyway?"
She sighed and got up. She looked strained, like a simple yanking and pulling of the zipper was more than enough task for her. Jade I concluded, was a girl who didn't like to exercise much. "You know how hard it is to maintain dreadlocks?" she asked while looking at her hair in frustration. "The answer is yes. I might cut it all off one of these days."
I smiled. "You'll go bald?"
"Maybe," she hinted. "What do you think?"
I stared at my friend more closely. She had the kind of beauty that was uncommonly seen. Like an exotic flower that bloomed in rare places. And right now she was staring at me expectantly, waiting for my answer. "I think you can pull it off," I finally replied. "You're just like this room." I gestured around us. The design has been changed again according to her mood. It now had plants in every corner. "You can still be beautiful even when you change your style."
She touched her chest. "Aww Mars. That's so sweet. I wish I can take you with me for the break."
I shrugged. We've talked about this over the weekend. Jade knew my situation back home. She wanted to take me with her so I wouldn't spend the break alone. But unfortunately, her folks decided to have a reunion, since they didn't get to see her often. Instead of feeling happy that they'd throw her a party, she was guilty because of me.
"It's not your fault," I said. "Some of my relatives are also like that. They don't like entertaining other people when having a reunion."
"I should really give you money for a hotel room at least."
I smirked at her and stood. "That would make me feel twice as bad. I don't like taking money from other people remember?" She nodded while I went to check on her luggage. The zipper didn't move when I tugged. "Why don't you just buy the hair products where you're going?"
She rolled her eyes. "I don't want to be scolded again. If you belong in our household, you'll know how much of a nagger my mom is. Stop spending money on this and that," Jade mimicked on a high pitched voice. "You think we became this rich by doing that? Blah blah blah." She sat on the bed to watch me struggle with the zipper.
"Well at least they didn't kick you out for liking a girl," I said. "Better a nagger than a nut."
"I know. So have you thought about where you're going to spend the week?"
