Chapter46. Demon
The last time I've ridden an expensive car was with El when we were going back to my house to confront my parents. Fate was playing jokes on me. Maybe. Now it was El's sister sitting beside me on the plush seat of the car, our elbows almost touching. Earlier this morning, a group of people knocked on the motel room where we stayed. They were Lilith's personal bodyguards, sent by the Hart's to make sure that their youngest was safe.
Unceremoniously, they told us to pack our things, though we had none, and go outside the motel where three cars were waiting idly. We would have boarded different vehicles if it wasn't for Lilith's insistence that I stayed with her. Since then, she has looked outside the window, her mind far away.
"Pull over," Lilith said to the driver after an hour's ride.
I couldn't see the female driver's reaction, with her eyes occluded by aviator shades as dark as our tinted windows. "Your mother ordered us to bring you directly to the airport so you can board the plane and go back to school. You have no business here. So does your lady friend."
"Says you," Lilith argued. "I make my own schedule, not you or mother. Pull over or you lose your job."
"Lilith," I said in a low voice. "She's right. We need to go back to the Academy. After everything that has happened, I think it's safer to be there."
"Not with these clothes." She glanced down. We've been wearing the same attire for a day and haven't gotten around to taking a shower. I could see where the frustration was coming from. After sweating through my uniform, it wasn't so appealing anymore. "I want to change," Lilith said. "Is that too much to ask for?"
The driver sighed. "You and your demands." She pressed a finger on her ear and spoke, "The wolf wants to stop and shop with the anon." Anon? Wow. She slowed the car to a stop on the side. I looked behind us. The convoy followed suit. "Here's the plan," the driver said. "Some of us will wait here while four guards stay with you. It will be formation A like we've always practiced. It's the safest around tourist spots like this."
Formation A? Seemed like they've done this hundreds of times. "No," Lilith said. "She and I will walk ahead while the guards follow behind. Far behind. Like a hundred feet or so."
"But. . ."
Lilith opened the door. "Do it, or I ask my mother for a replacement. Oh, and have my own car waiting for me when we get back. It's too stuffy in here with you and your radio. Coming Tarts?"
I jumped out of the car and stayed beside Lilith. Four guards tailed us while we walked. Though their expressions said that they wanted to go closer, they kept a safe distance behind us as ordered, looking smart with their suits. "Is it always like this?" I asked Lilith.
"About twenty percent."
"And the other eighty?"
She smirked. "That's what the car is for later." We stopped in front of an expensive looking shop. The name of the store was foreign. I would twist my tongue trying to pronounce it.
Lilith's was taking her first steps to the store when I said, "I'll look around the corner for another shop. I can't afford it here."
She whipped her head to me so fast, I got a whiplash just looking at her. "Don't insult me. I'm paying for everything."
"The clothes here aren't really my style." The salesperson, three of them to be exact, were peering at us curiously. Probably thinking why we were hesitant to enter. Lilith didn't notice them as she kept her eyes on me.
"What is your style then?"
I pointed my thumb behind me. "We passed by a vintage store earlier. They sell clothes, I think. I'd be more comfortable shopping there, if you don't mind."
