Chapter6.
After witnessing the duel over VR, I had a hard time keeping the excitement to myself. Everything that transpired was cool to say the least. I couldn't even fathom into words what I was feeling. It was mesmerizing. It was out of this world. There was nothing to compare it with. I was simply lost for words. The academy was full of surprises.
"Since you're new here," Jade said, disrupting my thoughts. "I'll give you a brief tour around the place. It will help you navigate the academy if you ever need to be alone." We walked along a well-trimmed stretch of grass. Some students who didn't watch the duel were there, lounging with their friends. I didn't recognize any of them. "First off, this island is large enough to house several castles. We call those castles campus."
"Because this is an academy."
"Correct. Except for the middle house and dorm houses where we all eat and sleep, the rest of the castles that are scattered throughout the island are used for educational purposes. Some courses get a whole castle to themselves, especially if they have a large number of students. Other courses share castles. You got that?"
"Sure."
"Think of this island as one big circle with uneven edges. It doesn't make sense, but it's the only example I got," she said. "In the middle, you will find the middle house and dorms. Then, in the surrounding areas are the campuses. Some of them can be accessed by walking. Others can only be reached by going to a terminal."
I arched an eyebrow. "Like a bus?"
She smiled. "Yeah, the island is that big." We passed by a couple of girls who were teasing each other about a project. They were probably sophomores or juniors. Jade nodded to one of them before she turned back to me. "We're going to one of the campuses today. It's used mainly by first years like us who doesn't have courses yet. Is that alright with you?" She stole a look at her wristwatch. "There's still an hour before breakfast anyway. Might as well use our time for productive things."
"No problem. You're actually doing me a huge favor. Thanks."
We walked a few more minutes in silence, giving me the opportunity to look around and observe. Trees, grass, and scenery, these are the three things that dominated the island. At least the part I've seen so far. The funny thing about it was even though there were many bushes, it was all trimmed to perfection. Some bushes resembled animals like horses, elephants, dogs, and even dinosaurs. Others were fashioned into women's figures and strange shapes. It felt like we were attending a huge gallery instead of walking outside. The rich and the brilliant always had it better.
It wasn't long before the grass ended, and I saw a road in the near distance. The road wasn't really that big. It was wide enough to support a single railing system. "How long do you have to wait for the train?" I asked, following behind Jade as she went to the covered stop where you could stand under while waiting.
"It's actually a tram. It comes around every ten minutes, so you can still catch up to your class if you miss one."
"Nice. . ." I leaned on a pole. It supported a sign that had the same shield and wing symbol that was stitched to our uniform. "Hey, do those symbols mean anything?"
Her gaze moved upward. "Yeah. Since the dawn of humankind, the symbols inside the shield have been used by the lesbian and gay community to express themselves." She stared weirdly at me. "Don't you know that? You're lesbian."
I smiled mysteriously at her. "Let's just say that I was sheltered." Jade nodded, seemingly able to understand the situation. If only she knew. My parents would burn those symbols down and erect statues of their saints if they saw it. Blasphemy, they would say.
