Chapter49. Group
The Academy was its usual impressive self when we got back. The guards by the highly advanced gate were stoic, standing by their post with straight backs and observant eyes as we passed through. The path from the gate to the grounds itself was cool and shady because of the trees. The air, though it traveled from place to place, was still different from the one we came across while on the cruise ship. Somehow the breeze in the island brought whispers, secrets- whether it be from the past or present.
As the cluster of trees broke apart, and the castle loomed in the distance, I felt the familiar sense of being transported in time. I didn't know if all castles in every part of the world had a tendency to elicit that reaction, but here in the island, it did just that. And of course, there was the courtyard where the students from each house were staying. Seeing it today gave me a sense of deja vu, especially since I was with Lilith, Blue, and Red who were part of the commotion that transpired here on the first day.
But now we weren't strangers, and I wasn't a gullible girl who was unsure of her footing and the direction she'd take in life. I was a part of something bigger. We were friends. Friends who couldn't look at each other because of our own reasons. "I'm going to my room to get settled," I said. "Jade hasn't seen me in days. Knowing her, she's probably searching the castles for her roomie."
"I'm heading to the Headmaster's hut to report," Red said. Candice made a face. We had a collective agreement prior to coming back that nobody should know about Jupiter, the chambers, and the Druids, even the Headmaster herself. It would be, as they said, more complicated than it was. "I'm not snitching," she cleared, looking insulted that Candice would think she would. "But the Headmaster would want a report on why her favorites were gone."
"What excuse are you going to give?" Blue asked. "Maybe I should go with you."
"You should. I'm using you as a reason, if you don't mind. Family drama. The Headmaster doesn't like concerning herself with such issues, especially when money or power struggle are the root cause. Give her a sob story about the Lady and Lord of the manor."
"As long as it doesn't reach my parents," Blue agreed. She hesitated and turned to us before leaving with Red. Lilith didn't say where she was going or what exactly she was going to do. Blue had a worried expression on her face, and I had a vague sense what it was about.
I didn't want to stick around for another round of bickering. "I'll be first to go," I said. "Send me word if you guys manage to find a proper place where we can talk." I went ahead to the castle, feeling their stares on my back. The students who were lounging on the courtyard glanced as I passed. I pretended not to see the obvious curiosity and envy in their faces. Who was I but a normal person to be associated with my friends? I kept second guessing myself too. They had no idea.
Jade was with a girl when I shouldered the door open. "I'll come back later," I said, covering my eyes. They both laughed at me like I said something off.
"She's about to leave," Jade said. I didn't catch a look at the girl's face as she ducked past me on the door, still laughing. "That's my classmate from swimming. She was asking me to find her center."
I closed the door with my foot. "Don't you mean chest?" I smirked.
Her emerald colored eyes sparkled. "I'd love to, but I made a vow to abstain until marriage. And I don't think touching that part will help my case." She gestured on the room. "Haven't you noticed? I've moved on from video games to something more rewarding. Energy and chakra, my friend. Those are the most important in life."
Now that she mentioned it, I noticed that the room has changed once again. From a console laden area, it became a shaolin haven. There were Jade statues, propped in different places. Twelve of them in fact. I counted. The faint smell of incense was making my nose twitch. She should really open the windows. And wait. Was that an altar? Jade just couldn't help herself. I saw her waiting for my reaction. I gave a thumbs up. "Even Buddha will be enlightened again," I said."
