Chapter59. Cloak and Dagger
Denial was going back to my room to find that Jade's corner had been vacated of everything. Sheets torn off, closet emptied, things removed, and me going to my side to stare vacantly at the space she left, couldn't believe that she was gone. Anger was throwing my pillows, grinding my teeth, kicking the chair shortly afterwards, sick at the probabilities. Bargaining was stopping my tantrums, telling myself that if I could somehow make her explain, things would come to light, and she would be proven innocent. Then came the depression. She wouldn't have gone if she was innocent, making me accept that guilt was the only possible conclusion. Thus was my process of grieving for a friend.
Together with Candice and Red, it was our job to find out why Jade has done that, but I wasn't doing good at it. I had been a big distraction to them than anything else. "No records," Candice said, staring at her screen. Red looked up from the desk to listen. She had allowed us to stay in her room, and even Candice could now freely jump on her bed. A first for all of us. "She used to be a member of the online community that's exclusive for the Academy students. Kind of like social media, but cooler since the nudes are in VR," Candice went on. "But when I checked, there's nothing. Her slate was wiped clean. Everything. Even the online family tree she showed me before. What's weird is you also have no record here, Mars. Mind telling us why?"
"I'm not even aware that there's an online community," I reasoned, crossing my legs. "I've been too caught up in the lamp competition." Not that I had to worry about that anymore. The absence of Headmaster meant the challenges were temporarily suspended. It was dangerous to continue without her, and from what I heard in the last two days that she was gone, the presiding Dean was not a fan of the contest. Red shrugged and went back to her readings. She had programmed the transparent screen to fit the desk and had been scrawling at information since we've been here. "What are you doing?" I asked her.
"Trying to track both Jade and the headmaster," she said. "They left the Academy at separate times, but I'm wondering if there's a connection between them." Having Red by our side was a blessing. She was always on top of things. If it weren't for her, I'd have a hard time collecting myself. "Didn't you say that Headmaster had been in your visions from the past life? Do you think she's innocent? She had a good track record handling the school for years, but we can't discount that her heart might have changed." Red didn't blink once while asking me.
"My past self liked her," I said. I've thought about the conversation she had with Jupiter in the hut. "She knew about my secrets too. Jupiter must have confided with her about the resurrection." I waited for Red and Candice's expression to change. I've been so scared to be judged by them. To be thought of as a freak. I sighed in relief when they weren't disgusted. "If she was a spy for the Druids, she'd surrender me to Daniel or kill me herself," I went on. "You didn't talk to those psycho's, Lilith and I did. They hated everything that had to do with the progression of mankind. They thought the five were abominations, and they loathe the Academy for what it is and can be. I can't imagine the headmaster working for those kinds of people."
"We also thought the same for Jade," Red said. "Where is she again?" I turned away from her prying eyes. "I apologize," she said more gently. "She was your friend. None of us would have known." I stared miserably at Blue's collection of robot figures while Red tapped on the desk, making the screen disappear. She then swiveled from her chair to face me and Candice. "I trust the headmaster," she began. "She'd been nothing but a bright leader, and I look up to her. Whatever her reason for leaving at this time must be valid."
Candice bumped her fist on the wall. "Damn right it is!" she agreed. "The headmaster is like the lesbian of us all. I look up to her just as I look up at Red's skirt when she's high on the stairs." Red growled a warning. "So that does it," Candice said, as if she hadn't heard anything. "Since Headmaster is gone, Jade disappeared, and we can't track where both went, where does this lead us?"
