Chapter7.

The first day of classes came sooner than expected. Thanks to all the buzz in the academy about the wishing lamp, Monday the next week was quick to arrive. The time in-between was spent asking Jade about the ins and outs of the academy. She tried to explain as best as she could, but in most instances, she would encourage me to experience it firsthand. We were preparing in our room, Monday morning, when I asked her a question.

"What is the significance of the contest?" I slipped on the boots provided by the academy. Today, I opted for the military coat and skirt combo for the uniform. It fit just right.

"What do you mean?"

I stomped my foot on the floor, testing the boots. It was comfortable and soft despite its sharp appearance. "What do we need the contest for?" I repeated. "How does it affect our school life? Do we even learn from it?"

Jade's confused look vanished. "Yes of course. We do learn a lot from the competition. But let me ask a question. Perhaps it can shed more light to your own queries." I looked quizzically at her. "If you can do absolutely anything in the world Mars, with no limits at all, what will you do?"

I thought hard. "Hmmm. If there are no boundaries to what I can achieve, I'll do everything as well. Why settle for a single thing?"

"Exactly." She smiled. "This academy is giving you the opportunity to move past your breaking point. That's why the contest is there. Bright minds like ours are given the chance to explore. To shatter the wall and do the impossible." She placed a hand on her chin. "I think when humans are given the ideal setup to play, the mind develops faster." She shrugged. "Or maybe the people in control are having fun watching us compete against each other. Who knows?"

"You have a point." I glanced at my expensive wristwatch. Jade gave me one the other day, saying that we couldn't afford to be late. She could afford to be late. Literally. I couldn't. "Let's head for breakfast."

As we stepped into the hallway, the room next to ours opened. Candice came out. Her eyes brightened when she saw us. Unlike me and Jade, she was wearing the uniform jacket and pants with her leather shoes. Her gaze snaked its way down my body. "Looking sharp today Mars." The three of us walked together. Some students were still in the Knowledge dorms, though most of them must be in the middle house, ready for breakfast.

"Thank you. You look good too."

She smiled naughtily. "What else do you like about me?"

"Your shoes. It's really shiny."

"But it's from the academy," she complained, pouting.

"Exactly."

Our small group made our way into the middle house. There, everyone was seated, chatting excitedly. Because it was the first day of classes, everyone was looking forward to the activities. The first years were particularly thrilled. It was fun guessing how the professors would conduct our lessons. Everywhere around us, flashes of blue, white, and black were seen. Most people sat according to their houses, but in some table, friends from different houses banded together.

From the corner of my eye, I saw Blue waving to me. She was seated beside Red and a number of other people, her hair a pale color this time. "Save me a seat," I murmured to Jade and Candice before going to Blue.

She greeted me with a smile. "Mars. It's good to see you. Have a seat."

"I'm with them." I pointed to my other companions.

"I understand." Her smile didn't falter. "Having fun here?"

"Yeah, it's very interesting." A thought crossed my mind. "Hey, if you want me to do anything for you and Red, I'd be more than happy to. You helped me a lot."
