Chapter64. Judas

Few inches separated me from life and death. Strange how a few seconds ago, I was dazed about Blue's reaction, concerned with Lilith, and disappointed at myself for failing my mother. All of those disappeared in favor of distress.

I was aware of everything; the sun going down on the horizon, its last rays shining on the trees; the chilly air that ran on my arms; the sweat rolling on my back; Jade's presence behind me. Let's not forget to mention the possibility of dying from her blade. She kept one of my arms on a tight grip on my back, and though I could move the other freely, the knife pressed on my throat made it difficult.

"I thought you were gone," I said, bidding for time. Red has taught us to look for an opening. A sign of weakness.

Not once did Jade relax. The knife on her hand wasn't held clumsily, and she had the air of someone who'd been trained. Why hadn't I seen the signs before? The bitterness behind my throat was overpowering my other senses.

Jade let go of my arm to grasp my hair. "Come here," she said. "We have an audience." I flinched when she yanked my head harshly, dragging me away from Blue who had returned to see what was going on. She might have heard the startled cry I made when Jade had seized me by the door. I didn't deserve Blue. She had my best interest in mind even when she was hurt. She was better off without me.

"How did you get here?" Blue asked, her voice leveled. She didn't move an inch, just waited and assessed.

"I didn't even leave in the first place," Jade answered. Her manner of speaking had changed from the best friend I've known from my first days in the Academy, to a cocky snake who'd been sleeping under the same roof. I half expected her tongue to dart out and hiss. Rage grated on my bones, rubbing, itching, begging to get out. I allowed her to blindside me like a naive little girl.

"You're one of them," I said. "You son of a bitch!"

"Stop underestimating me," she scorned. "I'm not just one of them. I'm their star player." A choke bubbled from my mouth as she forced the knife closer to my skin. "Stay where you are or your girlfriend is dead." Blue had been on the verge of running to us. "Or are you the other woman?" Jade pondered aloud. "Mars never got to tell me. She'd always been too busy sleeping with girls. Disgusting!"

A tremor ran through Blue. The twitching traveled from her legs, all the way to her mouth until her teeth chattered. The calm facade was gone when she spoke. "Let her go and I'll make sure you can leave the Academy without anyone following." Blue was making a grave mistake. Bargaining with the enemy would give them an advantage. We were on the winning team. Even if Jade cuts me, she wouldn't get out of here alive. That was my only consolation.

"I don't need that favor from you," Jade boasted. "I survived on my own without your help. Why, I even found the VR that you've been keeping in secret." She tugged my hair again, seemingly enjoying the power she had over me. "That's right. I hid in Jupiter's VR to conceal myself from the Academy, in one of the rooms upstairs while you're all down below, bickering stupidly. Great intel by the way. You've dug your own grave."

Jade's transparent screen appeared in front of me. Her hand released my hair so she could encode numbers on the program. "What do you want?" I groaned. "Are you going to destroy the Academy?" That had always been the goal for them.

Jade pressed the enter button. "I'm not, but she will." Blue's own screen popped up. "The Academy has a weakness," she said. "It may be impenetrable from outside, but once you're in, you can do almost everything." She simpered. "Like kill a girl, or get in the archives to steal information. Check your screen Blue. I've sent you everything you need. And don't even think of contacting the guards stationed at the gate or the hangar. You know what will happen to Kensington."
