Chapter 17.
In ancient Rome, Mars was the God of war. Compared to Ares who bared the same representation in Greek mythology, Mars was well-loved by the other Gods and people because he was fighting for peace. I found it funny that I, Mars Kensington, had the exact name as the God of war. While I had neither powers nor strength, I was fighting for my future. By winning the lamp, I would ensure my footing in this world.
But the similarity to the God didn't end there. Women, El and Blue in particular were also at war because of me. I never meant for it to happen. It just did. And because today was the first trial for the lamp, I had to forget their feelings for a while and focus on the task. My plan was pretty simple. Show up in the contest, make explosions, walk away unscathed, and live for another day. And then I'd deal with El and Blue. As they said, all was fair in love and war.
Jade peeked into our room. "Are you ready?" she asked. "The contest will start in thirty."
I looked down hopelessly. "It's too tight." The blue leather overall suit I was wearing showed off every curve in my body. I felt exposed.
Jade entered and came to me. "It's supposed to be this way. Just imagine going to a sequence with loose clothing. It will rip in a matter of seconds." She leaned down and tugged at my matching blue boots. "Got to make sure that it stays on. You should see the suit that Lilith is wearing." Jade whistled. "Cat woman much. Too bad it's not shiny."
Lilith's penetrating grey eyes came to mind. I had to shake my head to get rid of the thought. I had enough problems with her older sister already. The last thing I needed was to think of her. "Where will the contest be held?" I said. "Blue insisted on some last minute practice, so I wasn't able to ask around."
Jade beamed at my question. "You fit here so well that I always forget you're new to the concept. Actually, according to my sources there's an underground arena here. It's as big as the island. When you're in the sequence, space is not really an issue, but the people behind the Academy thought it would be good to have enough of it. They constructed the arena just for the contest."
"What about the spectators? Will you be present there?"
"Nope. It's too dangerous. We'll watch from the middle house." She blinked quickly. "But don't stress Mars, I know you'll win. Besides, everyone will be watching in VR. It's like we're there too but you can't see or feel us. If you're scared, just think of me. I'll lose my voice cheering for you." We high fived each other. Jade wasn't as talkative as Candice or cheerful as my sister, but she had a good head on her shoulders.
"Last question before I go." I picked up the book resting on my bed and handed it to Jade. "Do you know where this came from? I found it with my other stuff the other day." It was gift-wrapped on my bed when I came in. There was also a note saying, Read This For The First Challenge. I decided to keep that information to myself.
Jade thumbed through the book. "Maybe Candice put it here. You know she loves to leave us little surprises every now and then." I frowned. Candice was sweet at times. She even gave us chocolates the other day. But last night I woke up because of Jade's screams. Candice played a prank on her while we were sleeping and placed a dead lizard on the girl's forehead. "Anyway," Jade said. "You should go to the middle house and talk to the professors. They will direct you to the arena." She embraced me quickly. "Good luck!"
The professor I talked to was kind enough to show me the way. We entered a room and went down a long, narrow, circular stairway where walls were on either side. It was lit by torches and smelled earthy and dank. Judging from the length and time we walked, the arena must be four to five stories below ground. The place was huge. It was not grandiose or beautiful, just spacious like a plane hangar.
