Chapter 24.
The thing about debt is it could either be about money or owing someone a favor. Until one or both is repaid, the debtor would be forever a slave to the debtee. Like a puppet who had no choice but to follow his master's order. Since I was neither puppet nor slave, I was leaving no strings attached. The debt had to be repaid at one point or another. But at what cost?
"Uno!" Candice screamed. Bits of her saliva hit Jade on the forehead.
"Glad you're happy about this," Jade complained sourly. She wiped her forehead with the hem of her shirt. "Your turn Mars."
I put down a reverse card, followed by a draw four. "And that my friend, is how I win this game," I said with satisfaction.
Candice tossed her remaining card in the middle of the bed with a defeated sigh. "Tsk. Friendship destroyer. But seriously Mars, you're way too good at this. Have you tried playing poker? Maybe you should train for that. Your poker face is on point."
I stared at her while Jade silently collected the scattered cards we used. "What for? I have no use for it. I'd rather study."
"Psh." She crossed her arms. "Think about it. You're bound to lose the lamp competition anyway, so if you become a good poker player, you can get rich and continue studying here. Most rich people like us are suckers for gambling."
"And what made you say that I'll lose the contest huh?"
"Simple." She pointed to herself. "Because I'm also a contestant, duh!" I threw a pillow at her. It hit Jade when Candice deflected it with her arm. "Oops," Candice said.
"Sorry," I followed immediately. "Anyway, you still haven't told us the reason why you joined the contest," I said to Candice. "You're rich already. Leave the prize to us poor people."
"The price is not all about money remember? I have my reasons." Her eyes sparkled. "I'll tell you if you kiss me." She puckered her lips. "Come here Marsy Marsy." I crawled behind Jade to escape Candice. The girl was being silly again.
Jade finished stacking the cards neatly and placed it on the bedside table. We were in our room on a Friday, enjoying what was meant to be a friendly game of UNO cards. Except they lost to me for the tenth time in a row already, so it wasn't a game but more of a slaughter as Candice kept complaining.
"What happened to what's her name?" Jade asked. "The one you're dating."
"Hey peasant, don't call her that. She has a name and it's Trish," Candice said. "And we're going out tomorrow. I'll take her to wonderland. Cause you know, my body is a wonderland."
Jade cringed. "Weirdo. But that sounds good. Hope you both hit it off."
"I'll hit her alright. In her sweet spot."
A knock on the door made the three of us look. "I'll get it," I said before they could move. I opened the door a crack. "Huh? What are you doing here?"
El's gaze went to my eyes, then travelled down to my neck and all the way down to my shorts. "Hmmm. Sexy," she whispered.
"You came all the way here for that? Okay, I'm closing the door." She placed a foot on the crack, stopping me from shutting the door.
"Easy Mars, I'm here to collect your debt. Remember? I saved you from being excluded from the competition." She smiled in a very El manner. Predatory hidden by her attractive face. "We're going somewhere. Dress like you'd normally do. I'll pick you up in ten."
"Who's that?" Candice said as I closed the door behind me.
I exhaled slowly. "I need to go guys."
