Chapter 22.
Love is and forever would be the most twisted feeling in this world. It shouldn't be complicated, hurtful, or sad. It should be wonderful, enchanting, and leaves you feeling alive. Love wasn't the one that destroyed you, the poor soul who didn't know the definition of love did. Do not ever confuse it as such. Love would always be love. Loving the wrong person? Now that was a different story.
I wish I could say that all was right in the world, but I couldn't. Though I was supposed to be happy because I studying in a prestigious Academy, things were more complicated than it seemed. As Elizabeth Browning said in her sonnet, let me count the ways. First there was the issue with Blue and El. Though I was slowly recovering from the effects of the perfume, it was strange to know that I once felt love and lust for each of them. And to make it worse, some of it still lingered.
Second was the chamber that Red, Candice, and I found. It occupied my mind from time to time. The three of us haven't had a chance to talk yet because of our schedules. Red was busy preparing the sequence for the next challenge, while Candice and I were too consumed with our lives as freshmen. Last, but definitely not the least was my problem with Alya. I wanted to talk to her. Really talk to her about us. It has been days since I saw her, and for the life of me, I was dying to know how she was.
It was in the mid-afternoon, art class, when the opportunity presented itself. Jade, Candice, and I were seated together, listening to our professor drawl about art. It was the closest thing to normal I have experienced in a while. Me inside a classroom, simply indulging on the lecture.
Jade leaned to me. "I've been meaning to ask," she whispered, carefully checking to see if the professor noticed us talking. The coast was clear.
"Ask what?" I said, matching her low voice.
"Where did you go during those nights? You were gone for two days and nights, and I've kept wondering about it."
I trained my eyes on the professor. She was busy showing a documentary about the life of Leonardo Da Vinci. The paintings he made was floating in the middle of the classroom. I should be used to it by now, yet it still amazes me how magic and science converged in the Academy because of the VR.
"Did you hear a word I said?" Jade complained.
"Yes, I was making sure that the professor is busy. Chill. . ." I cleared my throat. "I slept on the courtyard in both nights. Homesickness," I reasoned. "I didn't want you to worry."
Jade leaned back on her chair. "That explains things." She whipped her head back to me, as if a thought suddenly crossed her mind. "But why is Candice always giving you the look? It's like the two of you share a secret." She crossed her arms. "I'm jealous. I'm supposed to be your best friend."
Hearing her name, Candice turned to us. "There, there," she said from Jade's other side. "You're still Mars' best friend. I'm different because we're like a thing now."
"Don't believe her," I mouthed to Jade, following it with a roll of my eyes.
"I saw that," Candice said.
"Saw what?" The loud voice of the professor called our attention. Us, and the dozens of students in the classroom. They were all staring at us now. Great. The professor was looking very displeased at Candice. "Miss Ford right?" she said. "Care to share to us what you saw? Is it more important than Da Vinci here?" By the way the professor said Da Vinci's name, it was obvious that she revered him.
"You got my surname right," Candice said. "But I'd rather people call me baby. If you know what I mean." I discreetly threw crumpled paper on her leg. Get a hint dude. You could get in trouble for this. "Speaking of surnames," she said, ignoring me and my warnings. "THE Ford was my great grandfather. We have a large motor company because of him. That's why I'm always encouraging everyone to ride me."
