Chapter 36. Flashback
Among all the times I'd remember the priest, it had to be now. As constant as the Sunday mass and confessionals I had to attend, there was Father Damien who welcomed me in church. Though I hated seeing the guy because he was a constant reminder of how screwed up my parents thought I was for being lesbian, he treated me rather nicely. Aside from the sighs and numerous reminders I'd get from him, Father Damien didn't stone me to death like most people, particular my parents would do.
So what was it about the Priest that I was remembering? In my mind's eye, I saw him now as if he was standing right next to me. There was a funeral, and we were all dressed in black. I recalled sneaking to one of the graves and looking at the tombstone. "See those dates Mars?" Father Damien said. I didn't notice that he went to where I was. "Those dates are insignificant." He pointed to the year of birth and death. "It is the line in between that counts. That is how you live."
The reminder nagged at my head as I came back into the present. I shivered as I stared above, to the mouth of the hole where we landed. The storm has officially began. It arrived with a gust of freezing wind and more snow than I've seen in my short existence. It was amusing to think of the term existence at this point when we were clearly going to die. But was I able to fulfill the line in between as Father Damien said? Or did I live my life not for my sake, but for the people around me?
"Do you know how I met Red?" Blue asked all of a sudden. We've been silent since the snowstorm started. I was surprised to hear another person's voice after conversing with my mind for the longest time. She didn't wait for us to answer. Blue dove right into the story. "The Lord and Lady wanted me to train," she said. "As the future Lady of this land, you cannot be weak. That's what my father said. So they called their friends, which happened to be Red's parents."
"Why do we have to listen to this God awful story?" Lilith asked grumpily. Like Blue, it was refreshing to hear her voice again. I wasn't alone after all. I should never have thought that. "If I'm going to die, I want to do it in peace. Not while hearing your voice."
I licked my lips. It has become chapped and dry because of the wind. The only reason why we weren't completely covered in snow was because of the trees above that served as a shield. But if we weren't going to die because of being buried in powder, it would be of entirely another cause like hypothermia. I couldn't even feel my legs anymore. It has numbed five minutes ago. "Let her speak," I said in a raspy voice. "I'd like to hear the story."
"As I was saying," Blue continued. "Red came to our house as a favor. We've been friends ever since. She was strict and rigid, and I was open and friendly, but our differences were what kept us together."
"That doesn't make sense," Lilith argued. "In reality, opposites don't attract. You need to have a common ground with people. That's why Tarts don't belong with us." Blue shifted her arm. It caused a domino effect, making me shift my body too, and Lilith move hers. Though I was sandwiched between them, it didn't make my body less cold. If ever, the shivering has intensified tenfold. I couldn't really converse with them even if I wanted to.
"Yes it does make perfect sense," Blue said. "The uniqueness will always pique your interest. You strive to get to know someone because you know she has different tastes. It keeps you guessing, just like Mars. And no matter what you say, she belongs with us."
Lilith snorted. "You're just saying that because you have the hots for her."
"Don't you?" Blue said, a challenge in her tone. "Don't you appreciate nice and pretty things when you see them?"
Lilith paused before saying, "Nice is overrated, and beautiful things are not meant to last. I only value things that are immortal, if not astronomical." Blue chuckled at her answer. I was too tired to comprehend it. The endless cold was taking a toll on me.
