Chapter 14.
Blue was done with her business meeting when I returned to the lobby of the posh office. My timing was good. She was just outside the office, talking to a tall woman who I could barely make out. The door was blocking my view of her. Blue turned in my direction when she sensed me in the lobby. She grinned.
"There she is," Blue said to the person she was conversing with. "Come here Mars. I'd like to introduce you to our client." I hurried to them. The door opened wider. "Mrs. Hart, this is Mars Kensington, my partner for the day." I didn't miss the last name. Lilith did say that her parents owned the cruise ship. Perhaps it was her mother.
I smiled politely at the stern faced woman. She was beautiful and looked young for her age, as if she just left her thirties. "How do you do?"
She looked impassively at me from head to foot. "Busy as always." She turned to Blue. "Miss Kensington is the same age as my Lilithia?"
"Aren't you supposed to ask me that?" I said before Blue could answer. I shrugged as they turned to me in shock. "I mean, I'm right here. You don't have to rely on third party information. I'm fully capable of speaking for myself."
Blue looked pleased at me. Mrs. Hart in the meantime still had surprise written all over her. It took a few seconds before she could close her mouth and nod her head. She cleared her throat. "Excuse me for my manners. I'm used to talking to subordinates this way."
"I'm not your employee," I cleared. "And I don't plan to be in the future. But I do respect how quick you are to admit your fault." I gestured around the lobby. "You have remarkable taste as well Mrs. Hart. The cruise ship is astounding. I'm sure you handpicked most of the design even though you have hundreds of people to do it for you. Not every person of your status would do that."
She pinched her eyes at me. "How can you say I handpicked it?"
I pointed to the ceiling, at the mosaic Blue and I were gazing at from earlier. "Because the women in the artwork had grey hair such as yourself. The whole ship had those kinds of design everywhere I look. It's not that obvious, but you will notice it if you look hard enough. If I may be bold for a second, I want to ask if the artwork is of you and your wife?"
She couldn't hide how impressed she was. Mrs. Hart smiled vaguely. "No. The women in the painting are my children. Each a representative for the three of them."
"Two of them," came Lilith's voice. She walked to the lobby with an arrogant air. "Mother," she said with a small bow of her head when she came to us. "Black. Bart."
"Blue and Mars," Blue corrected with an easy smile. She was probably used to this kind of behavior. "You can call us Blur if you're finding it hard to say our names individually. Or Blars. Whatever rocks your boat."
"I don't like the sound of it," Lilith said with a roll of her eyes.
"Lilithia." Lilith's head snapped up when her mother spoke. Mrs. Hart sounded eerily calm, yet Lilith turned rigid. "I didn't call you here for small talk," her mother said. "I want you to accompany Blue and Ms. Kensington around the ship."
Lilith gasped. "Like a tour guide?" Her hands formed into fist. "There are many people who will do that mother. Why can't our other employees show them around?"
"Because mother said so," another person said. I followed the sound of the voice.
Lilith said her name with an excited squeal. "El!" Lilith seemed to have forgotten about us as she ran to the other girl.
"Oh boy," Blue murmured when Lilith wrapped her arms around El.
"I thought you wouldn't be able to make it?" Lilith said. She looked adoringly at El whom I realized at that time was her sister. Why didn't I think of it? The hair was a dead giveaway.
