Chapter 30.
If people were to ask about the stages of my life, I'd tell them that it could be summed up in two; life before and after thirteen. You pretty much know how it all went downhill since then, but when we were closer, my parents used to take me to the movies a lot. You see my religious folks thought they wouldn't have any children after trying for years, and so when they had me, they took great lengths to make me feel happy.
In the movies that we've watched, I remember the lead character living a double life as an agent. I've always pondered how it was to keep secrets from people you treasured. Now that I was doing the same with my friends, I could say that it was hard.
My meetings with Red and Candice became more frequent the past few days. So was with Blue. With the latter, she was beginning to teach me the concept of coding. With Red and Candice, we were working hand in hand to discover the who, why, and how of Trish' death. We deduced that finding the killer would lead us to the spy, and knowing who that was would help us solve the other mysteries we desperately wanted an answer to.
We kept all of this in secret. We believed that the more other people knew, the higher chance of the information leaking out. But aside from that, I was keeping another secret from them. I haven't told Red and Candice about Dean J's pendant, the one bearing the symbol of the Druids. It could be nothing really. It could be my imagination playing tricks on me that night. I wasn't even sure if I've seen her pendant clearly to know.
However, telling it to Candice this early stage in our investigation would be troubling since she was often irritable and irrational. In the meantime, I took Red as someone who valued authority. For her, Dean J was authority, and until I had further proof that what I thought I saw was really the Druids symbol, I should probably keep my mouth shut.
For now, I was concentrating on the motive of the killer. Even detectives follow step-by-step investigations. If I were to solve this, I had to do it with unbiased, clear, and sound thinking. Anything more than that and I would end up in the asylum. Bright mind or not, it was too much for a person.
After meeting with Red and Candice in one of the empty rooms in the Middle House, I made my way to the courtyard. My afternoon class was three hours from now, and I had a lot of time to kill. I was staring into the piece of paper where I've written my thoughts when I slammed into someone, causing my borrowed novels to scatter on the ground.
"Sorry," I mumbled as I bent low to pick my things. "I should have been more careful."
"What's this?" Lilith asked. She was staring at my notes. "Motive for killing. Who is the killer? How is the killer related to the cult?" Her gaze drifted to me. "Are you sticking your neck somewhere it's not wanted Tarts?"
I snatched the paper from her. "That's for a project." I shoved the rest of my things inside my large messenger bag.
"I wasn't born yesterday," she said, then stared thoughtfully at me.
It made me uncomfortable somehow. "Hello?" I waved in front of her. "Is there someone up there?"
She blinked rapidly. "You hurt my eyes that's all." I scowled. She was always like this, telling me rubbish. "But since I can use you, I think I have to get used to your face a little longer, at least for now." Lilith turned her back to me and started to walk away. "Follow me."
"Why, so you can insult me more? I have better things to do."
She dangled something in the air. My face turned hot when I saw what it was. "I think you dropped your lingerie," she said. "Nice color though, Red would approve."
I ran to her and seized the thing out of her grip before stuffing it hastily in my bag. The few people who were able to see us in the courtyard were smiling mischievously to me as we passed. "If you must know, P.E is my next subject so I needed something to change into after shower," I said to Lilith. "I don't usually carry that with me."
