Days had passed since Sol, Bell, and Gios had left the island.
Life had returned to its familiar rhythm, but something between you and Qimir had shifted.
Not broken.
Not even necessarily colder.
Just... quieter.
The island had always been quiet, but now there was a different quality to it. The kind of silence that settled between two people who loved each other deeply, yet were each carrying something the other could feel but not reach. Qimir had noticed it almost immediately. He noticed everything about you. The longer pauses before you answered him. The way your eyes sometimes wandered toward the horizon when he spoke. The hours you spent sitting alone in meditation, sometimes long after the sun had gone down, your body completely still while the rest of the house slept.
And strangely, you seemed happier.
That was what confused him most.
There was more light in you lately. Your shoulders didn't seem to carry quite as much tension. Sometimes he caught you smiling to yourself for no reason, or laughing more easily when the boys did something ridiculous. You seemed lighter, almost peaceful.
But you had not told him why.
And for Qimir, that distance had become increasingly difficult to bear.
He could feel that something had changed inside you.
He simply couldn't reach it.
That afternoon, the four of you were outside beneath the warm island sun. The breeze came gently off the water, carrying the scent of salt and greenery through the garden. You sat beside Qimir near the low wooden table, preparing food while the boys tore around the grass nearby, their laughter carrying across the clearing.
Noam had found a stick and was using it as a lightsaber, swinging it dramatically through the air.
"I got you!" he shouted.
Serae immediately dropped into an exaggerated fighting stance.
"No, you didn't!"
"I did!"
"You missed!"
"I didn't!"
"You did!"
Qimir glanced over his shoulder.
"You're both terrible fighters."
The boys stopped.
