Sans had asked you one more thing.
"Can you please just let my brother see ya? He's harmless, I promise. No matter how much he tries to look... intimidating."
You happily agreed, as you had no idea what you were doing or where you were going. Besides, you could trigger more memories by doing this.
Sans and Papyrus were talking among one another. "AND THEN, UNDYNE POURED SOAP INTO MY-" You stopped on the dirt path, hands in the pockets of your sweater alike to Sans' style. Papyrus went slack-jawed, staring at you as if you were an oddity. He looked at Sans, then you, then Sans. Sans mocked him by doing the same. You, Papyrus, you, Papyrus. Finally, Papyrus' grabbed the collar of Sans' hoodie, dragging him down to whispering level. Instead, Papyrus screamed.
"IS THAT A HUMAN?!"
"Uh, no. I'm pretty sure that's a rock."
"O-Oh."
"But hey, what's in front of the rock?"
Papyrus gasped. "IS THAT A HUMAN?!"
"Yep."
Sans' grin was almost rolling off his face. His smile was infectious.
"FINALLY! I SHALL BECOME POPULAR! POPULAR! POPULAR! HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMAN!" Papyrus pointed to you. "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!"
"Um, may I pass?" You asked, in a small voice.
"YOUSHALLNOTPASS!" Papyrus insisted. If you were any closer, your eardrums would burst. How can Sans- Oh, right, he was a skeleton. Skeletons.... didn't have eardrums.
"But... I need to pass." You said, your DETERMINATION wavering. It was a little scary for you, as Papyrus was pretty intense. Sans was laid back, and although he had frightened you at first, he seemed easier to get along with than his brother was.
"HUMAN! I SHALL THROW ENDLESS PUZZLES AT YOU IN AN ATTEMPT TO CAPTURE YOU! ONLY CONTINUE ONWARDS IF YOU DARE!" Papyrus ran in the opposite direction of you, and Sans lazily walked towards you.
"Hey."
"Hi."
"We need to talk about something before you move on, there, kiddo." His grin disappeared, and so did the little orbs of light in his eyes. "If you hurt my brother in any way, you're gonna have a bad time."
Again, that terrifying feeling. Sans was full of killing intent and it wasn't even funny. Where had the pun lover gone?
"I don't know what you did to your body, and I don't know why you're able to talk in this timeline... but I will find out, capiche? And when I do, you're done for." Sans turned around and began to walk after his brother. "You dirty brother killer."
You were shocked. The kind skeleton had been replaced with something much more insidious; you could feel your DETERMINATION breaking into pieces.
[Stay DETERMINED.] Gaster said, approaching you from behind. [If you lose your DETERMINATION, something bad will happen.]
"Can't you tell me what I have to do?! Why am I the only one who can see you?!" You snapped. Gaster simply stared at you, unaffected by your anger.
[It'll only make sense if you remember it yourself, but here goes nothing. You are me, and I am you.] Gaster smiled at you. You were still confused.
"But... I'm me."
[And you're me, too.]
"Are you saying that we're the same person?"
[But we're not.]
"But if you're me and I'm you..."
[I am you and you are me, but we are not the same person.] Gaster began to fade away, and you reached out for him, your fingertips lightly brushing against the fabric of his black labcoat before it dissappeared entirely.
"You can't just hit me with something like that and then leave." You muttered. Your teeth began to chatter from the cold. Sans had said something about timelines, and how you were a dirty brother killer.
But Sans' brother.... was still alive.
You trudged forwards, almost completely missing the fact there was a field of electricity in front of you.
"HUMAN. HUMAN, STOP. HUMAN, WAIT. HUMAN? HUMAN, CAN YOU HEAR ME? HUMMMMMAN. SANS, DID YOU BREAK THE HUMAN?" Papyrus glared at Sans, who seemed just as disconnected as you.
"I don't think I did, Paps. I mean, maybe the human is just regretting some of their choices right now." Papyrus didn't notice that Sans' eyesockets were completely devoid of light.
"OH. WELL, HUMAN, WELCOME TO YOUR CAPTURE ZONE! THIS IS THE ELECTRIC MAZE.... IF YOU TOUCH THE WALLS OF THE MAZE, THIS ORB WILL DELIVER A HEARTY ZAP TO YOU!" Papyrus triumphantly held up a glowing blue orb.
You smiled the best you could at Papyrus and took a step forwards- the maze instead shocked Papyrus.
"OWWIE!" Papyrus shouted. You stole a quick glance at Sans, worried he would blame you for this. However, he chuckled.
"Paps, I think the human needs to be holding the orb." Sans had turned completely back to normal. Papyrus thought for a second.
"WELL, YES...THAT DOES MAKE SENSE." He trudged through the snow towards you, leaving tracks in the snow. "CAN YOU HOLD THIS, HUMAN?" You hadn't been this close before. You took the orb into your own hands, brushing against his own as you did so. Papyrus wheezed. [Author note: Lolwut.]
"I... AH, I'M HEADING BACK NOW. PLEASE AWAIT INSTRUCTIONS."
"Of course I will, Papyrus!" You gave him a sweet smile, and his joints locked up.
"WELL, UM, YES. OF COURSE YOU WILL. VERY MUCH SO. YES. BECAUSE I AM THE GREAT PAPYRUS?" He asked, more to himself than you. He dashed for the other side. "PLEASE MAKE IT TO THIS SIDE. IF YOU CAN PASS THIS PUZZLE, I SHALL GIVE YOU MORE!"
"I'd like more!" You attempted to treat Papyrus as kindly as possible, so Sans could see you meant him no harm. However, a look of loathing and suspicion was crossing Sans' face. Papyrus, however, was internally freaking out. At least, he thought internally. Externally he was making faces and making small squeaking noises.
You quickly navigated the maze, stepping exactly in Papyrus' footprints. You stopped beside Papyrus, looking up at him with a smile.
"WOWIE! HUMAN, YOU SOLVED THAT PUZZLE SO EASILY! IT MUST BE TOO EASY. THE NEXT ONE SHALL BE HARDER!" Papyrus ran off before you could talk to him in any way. You turned to glance at Sans, and his killing intent was even worse.
"I'm still not buyin' your lies, kiddo."
He disappeared, right then and there. You blinked, thinking you were just seeing things. You breathed out, upset.
"What does he mean by...timelines?" You muttered to yourself, unaware that Sans had only moved a little behind you to observe your actions. You trudged forwards, to the next puzzle.
