Sans had proposed to you, not even a day ago. You felt frigid on the inside, as if your heart would never dethaw. Part of you wanted to curl up and cry, and the other part wanted to scream at the you in the mirror, saying, 'just tell him!'
Unfortunately, such was not the case.
And that was why you left without telling him about it. Perhaps leaving was immature; perhaps it was a necessity. Either way, you didn't know. You just wanted to get out of there.
You were going to search for, and eradicate, one of the World Trees. If you were to do that, it would stop sucking the life out of the dragon it had created and let it fly free. You were traversing through the woods when you met an interesting person; someone who you would come to regret meeting.
"I can smell death before it takes a person, you know. It smells bitterly sweet, almost mockingly so." He was leaning against a tree, his eyes closed. There was no doubt about it; this was a human man.
"Who are you?" You ask, fearfully.
"I am Ulwraithe; a type of monster that was not cursed to stay underground because I could blend among humans. As in my name, I am a wraith, and I come to cull a soul when it is nearly time. Interestingly, I was assigned yours." As he stepped forwards, his eyes opened. There were none, just empty, gaping holes where there should be eyeballs. There was no blood, only darkness.
You took a couple steps back, and stumbled over a fallen log. He seemed to not walk, but float towards you. "Stay away from me!"
"I can't. You have such a sweet scent...besides, f I get too far away from you, I'll always wake up closer and closer to you depending on how close you are to paying your dues. Relax; I only stared working this current job today. This means you have a month or so left." He reached out to touch you, and his hand passed through your body, but it gave you the shivers. He was like a walking nightmare. "Fun fact; Wraiths can only open their eyes once a century, when they cull the soul assigned to them from the beginning of time. I opened my eyes for you a century ago, but you cheated death... you will not cheat it again."
With that, he seemed to fade away... you were shocked. Your hands shook, and Ajax seemed restless.
I don't like him, sweetheart. Shake him. Find some way to get rid of him.
And with that, Ajax, for once in a magical moon, went silent, voluntarily!
There was no time for celebration. You needed to find the tree and you needed to find it now. If you didn't, then the dragon would die. You would never fulfil your promise, and that wouldn't be good. You needed to at least be helpful once before you died.
And the Wraith weighed on your shoulders, reminding you every step of the way.
