[Listen to the song above while reading.]

You were sitting at the table with Toriel. She had been staring at you expectantly for a while now, her face with an expression of glee.  Her eyes were lit up as they had been when she heard you had regained a memory.

You took a bite, and dropped the fork. Toriel's face went to worry. "It's so good, mom!"

Wait, did you just call Toriel mom?

"C-child..." She stuttered.

"I...I'm sorry." You blushed deeply, looking in any direction other than at her.

"If it makes you happy, then please call me your mom. I have been so lucky, as to be gifted with such a gentle and positive child..." Toriel stood, and walked over to you, drawing you close to her bosom. You'd never felt happier, but you knew about the dinosaur in the room.

You couldn't stay here.

"M-Mom..." You said, testing the word on your tongue. Why did your heart make this so hard for you? You wanted, more than nothing, just to forever stay here in her arms.

[It will all reset.] A figure appeared behind Toriel, and it frightened you. [If you don't go forwards, you will never have this again.]

You knew this figure, you just didn't know from where. In your eyes, it was nothing more than a shadow. But you knew that alike to Toriel, it was a monster. You felt complete trust towards the stranger who was intruding on this.

"I love it. I love you, and I love here, but..." Toriel pulled back, staring at you with sad eyes. "I can't stay here, mom. I have to move on, because I need to experience life. I need to do something, and it's nagging me and surrounding all my thoughts but for the life of me I can't remember what it is. As much as I'd like to stay in these wonderfully warm, fluffy hands forever... I can't."

"....Child, you need to stay here with me." Toriel said, her voice firm. "You can't leave these ruins. You don't understand what'd happen to you."

"Please, just give me a chance to try!" You protested.

"...Stay right here." Toriel's face looked dark. "I have something to do."

Despite her protests, you followed her every step of the way. She stopped, and turned to look back at you after you got to the bottom of the stairs. "Child," Toriel gritted her teeth. "Go back upstairs, please." She continued on, and so did you.

Finally, the two of you reached a great, big door.

"I'm going to destroy this door, so you'll never be able to leave me or the ruins. Child, you don't understand what's waiting for you out there. Anyone who walks out of this door doesn't survive the trek to the surface." Her face turned soft, gentle. "Child, just agree to stay with me. I, your mom, will protect you."

You shook your head. "Toriel....no, mom...I'm sorry. I have to go. Children grow up, and leave the nest.  You will always be my mother, because you were the very first person I ever met. Isn't that the same as being born? You always meet your mother first." You smiled, but Toriel could see through you. You were just as reluctant to go through with this as she was.

"Child...if I am to let you go here..." Toriel's face had been angled towards the ground, filled with uncertainty and sadness. However, her head snapped up, and the look in her eyes was that of sheer DETERMINATION. "Then you must prove to me that you can hold your own!" Fire surrounded Toriel.

You were prepared.

You were DETERMINED.... not to hurt Toriel.

"I refuse to fight you, mother!" You shouted. Toriel looked away, covering her eyes with a furry hand, and the fire came at you. You quickly dodged, drawing out your own soul. The small, grey heart infected you with the truth. You could see Toriel didn't want to fight you.

"Fight me, Child! There's no way you're getting past me without this!" She dropped her hand, a look of self-loathing spreading across her face. She forced herself to look at you while she fired round after round of fire at you.

"I can't, mother! I love you too much to even think about raising my fists against you!" You shouted, tears spilling from your eyes. Your heart rang out with truth and  DETERMINATION. Toriel would not be hurt.

"Gosh darn, child! Just hit me already! Do something! Why are you not fighting back?!" Toriel asked. "You're making this harder on both of us!"

You dodged another round, and spoke, loudly and clearly. "I refuse! I'm not going to hurt someone who I care about!"

"Then act like you don't know me!"

"Never! I would never hurt anyone!"

"Is it someone you care about, or anyone in particular?! Make up your mind, child!"

"I'd never hurt someone who has another person waiting on them!"

Toriel's eyes widened. "W-what?" Her mouth hung open slowly, as if a sudden realization dawned on her.

"I... I can feel it. My soul can feel it. Someone is waiting on you. I don't know who, but they're hoping you'll come home soon." I said, quietly. "I could never hurt another person who has someone waiting on them..."

[Because I am also waiting on someone.] "Because I am also waiting on someone."

You didn't know who was speaking. Whether it was you, or Gas-

Gaster?

Yes, the shadow had a name.

W.D. Gaster. Wing Dings Gaster. Dr. Gaster. The scientist, Gaster. You only knew his name, and yet not much else.

"Child..." Toriel said, quietly. "I....can't do this. Not anymore." She dropped her head in shame. "I...I am being so selfish. All you want is to regain your memories, and I...wanted to keep you here against your will..."

"Mo-"

"I have but one thing to ask of you, child." She said, quietly, as she swept past you. "When you leave here, please... don't come back."

It felt like your heart was breaking. However, before the woman you knew as your mother left you...

"M-mom!" You stumbled over your words. Toriel's footsteps had stopped, so you knew she was listening. "I really, really love you.... and even if I don't return, I'll always.... always love you. I'll never forget you, so please don't forget me!"

"Who could forget such a good child as yourself?" The footsteps resumed. You exhaled in relief, but looked at the door towering above.

You hoped you were DETERMINED enough to handle this. You couldn't summon as much DETERMINATION as you had when you refused to hurt Toriel, but you could feel a small amount of DETERMINATION inside you.
