Sans' expression was unreadable.

"Sans, please tell me what that person on the phone did to Toriel." You whispered, propped against the tree. Sans raised his hand, and you flinched. His eye had that same blue glow, and blue ectoplasm was dripping from the other eye.

My entire body lit up.

"I'm not as good at this as Pap is, but it'll have to do." He spoke softly.

"Sans, please. I need to know."

"So her name was Toriel..." His knees buckled, and he chuckled.

"What do you mean, was?" I reached out to touch him, and my hand simply slid over his hand.

"Kiddo. I really hate to tell ya this, but Frisk doesn't joke around. Toriel... my joke buddy, one of the last people who..." He went quiet.

"What happened to my mother?" You asked, tears welling up in you eyes. The scene in front of you blurred. You already knew the answer, but you didn't want to acknowledge it.

"She's... gone." Sans muttered. His skeletal hands brushed over yours and clenched tightly, leaving red marks across your skin.

"What do you mean, gone?" You whisper, tears now falling down your face.

"I mean she's no longer here."

"You're lying."

"She called you to warn you about...them, before she died."

"She's not dead!" You cried, and attempted to scramble to your feet. Sans' eye began to glow blue, and you felt as if you were falling into an abyss.

By the next time you were actually aware of what was happening, you felt skeletal hands on your side and under your knees. You were being carried, most likely by Sans.

Your ability to see came back, and you were staring up at a ceiling. The skeleton had blank eyes, as he did when he was normally angry.

"-BUT WHY NOT?" Papyrus' voice filled your ears.

"Because the human is sick, Pap. I need you to call Undyne. Get her to come here and tell her there's a human."

"BUT UNDYNE WILL...TAKE THEM AWAY."

"There's two humans, Pap. This is the good human. The bad human is coming, and the bad human...hurt the good human's mommy."

"WHAT?! WHERE IS THE MOMMY OF THIS HUMAN NOW?!"

"...In a better place, Pap. But this human is hurt and Undyne is our only chance at saving them."

"...I UNDERSTAND. I WILL CALL UNDYNE IMMIDEATELY. SANS, PLEASE STORE THE HUMAN SAFELY IN YOUR ROOM WHILE I EXPLAIN."

"Actually, Pap, it would be better if I were to explain it to Undyne. She'd understand better if I told it to her while she was actually here."

"...OKAY, BROTHER."

You could feel yourself being carried upwards. The sound of a door opening and closing was your cue to open your eyes.

You were gently placed on a bed.

"Thanks for letting me do the speaking, Kiddo."

He had known you were awake. Of course he had.

"No problem... not like I have an idea about what's going on, anyways..." You mutter. You felt empty, like a void. Toriel's last words echoed through your head and you began to cry.

"I know what you're going through." Sans said quietly. "I know nothing that I'm gonna say is gonna comfort you, too."

"Then why say it?" You murmur.

"Because if you're anything like me, you're gonna get crazy ideas in your head. Ideas like protecting people."

"Who is there left to protect?"

"That is for you to find out." Sans grunted, sitting himself on the bed he had placed you in. "I can't help you find the people you need to protect, but they're out there. I want to protect my brother. If I were to fail..." His eye sockets went dark. "Then I'd make it a suicide mission to protect anyone who wasn't my brother."

"Why?" You asked, weakly. Your only memories were the ones told to you and even then you made your first bad memory; the one of your mother's death.

"Heh. That's for you to find out, Kiddo."

"Can you stop saying that?"

"PAPYRUS! WHERE'S THE HUMAN?!" A female screamed at the top of her lungs. You could hear it infected with rage.

"U-UM, UNDYNE, THE HUMAN IS SICK! PLEASE KEEP IT DOWN!"

"PAPYRUS, THIS IS OUR CHANCE TO GRAB IT! I'M HELLUVA LOT EXCITED!"

"THE HUMAN IS UPSTAIRS..."

A spear flew through the door, leaving a hole in it. A fish - lady burst through the door, kicking it open. Instantly, she was on you, holding a spear above your throat.

Sans was your only solace as a giant skull appeared beside him.

"Move that spear, Undyne, and it'll be you next." Sans was as dark as ever. Without Papyrus there, he didn't seem shy when it came to holding back.

"Sans...are you betraying us?"

"I'm not betraying anyone. This human is good. There's an evil human on the way." Undyne stared at Sans, and then lowered her spear.

"But... we can just take this soul." Undyne muttered with angst.

"I need you to evacuate Snowdin." Sans voice was completely serious.

"Why?" Undyne matched Sans.

"Because the human murdered a monster already. That monster had previously fostered this human. It was a monster that I knew."

"...So we team up and kill the bad human?"

"Yes. But before that, we get Papyrus to take this human far away."

"...I see now. You think that giving him a mission to protect this human could potentially keep him safe."

"And buy time. If Papyrus can get this human to Asgore before we.... well, we'll be dead if he can. And if we get to Asgore before Papyrus can, it's safe to say we're alive."

"You're gonna fight?" You whisper. Both Undyne and Sans turn to you.

"Of course I'm gonna fight. This is my home and these are my people. I'm not going to abandoned them." Undyne glares at you.

"If it means savin' Papyrus, these lazybones are gonna be active, even if it's just for a little while."

Both Sans and Undyne had their reasons for fighting, but what was yours?

Toriel was gone. The first person you had ever met.

Gone.
