Once upon a time, there was a lonely guardian of a tree. This tree was known as the world tree; he guarded it with his life as this tree fed the world's very lifeforce.

He looked down on the earth, sitting in the moon, envious of human interaction. Envious of monster interaction. He wanted so badly to have someone to talk to, too, as he was trapped inside the moon with the tree. He could build anything he desired in this world, except for a friend. Anything he wanted to show up, it was there. His only limit was his imagination.

As he searched for a way to get out of the moon, the world tree heard his pleas.

A girl lay dying in an alley, having been stabbed over and over and over, coughing up blood as her life force faded into nothingness. She saw the sky inside the moon, heard the wind, as the grass brushed against her cheeks.

Ajax approached what would be his new friend and she screamed. Her pleasant dream had become a nightmare, but she couldn't move. Couldn't get up and run. As she took her final breath, Ajax touched her.

She died instantly as wherever he touched, cuts blossomed against her skin. In anger, he turned towards the World Tree, the only one who could have given him the gift of company but snatched it away at the last second. For the tree was magical and it heard prayers; it couldn't grant these prayers most of the time but if it truly wanted to, it could do something.

The World Tree began to splotch black.

And then, Asriel died. Humans became hateful of monsters and sealed them away. Darkness spread throughout the world beyond what it had been before and many died.

Ajax, alone and holding the corpse, blood blooming from wherever he touched, had an idea. If the girl's soul was gone then he'd just make another soul all by himself.

She wouldn't scream when she saw him for he'd fill her with nothing but good. Sadly, Ajax didn't have much good and she used up almost all he had.

As the grey heart floated above the body, he lowered his arms, causing the heart to float into the body. He swept his hands across the girl's skin and their sharing of the same soul caused her to heal.

As the girl opened her eyes and looked around, they came to a rest on Ajax. "Hello." They were knowing, showed signs of forbidden knowledge. She knew much too much for a human. Ajax knew this but he couldn't bring himself to do anything about his perfect friend.

"Hello." He replied, picking her up as if she were a princess. His hands were pitch black, his face acting as if it were black static on a T.V. His voice changed. But she did not judge this.

As he walked over to the more open area of the meadow, he was overjoyed; he was finally not alone.
