You trudged through the snow. This was the place you had seen in your dreams, which frightened you, and stalled your DETERMINATION a little.
You knew the figure would be walking behind you any minute now. A snap of a branch alerted you, and you knew it would begin.
"I k-know you're there." You stumbled over your words- not a good first impression. "I...I saw this in a dream! So if you could please, please just come out and not eat me I would be perfectly fine with that. It's actually preferable." No response. The woods were quiet, and your voice was the only echo.
You continued to walk forwards after a minute, but a lingering presence was felt. You swallowed your fear, straightened your back, and strode towards what seemed like a bridge.
Your fear reached a pinnacle when another voice began to bounce off the empty echoes of the forest.
You stopped. Someone was right behind you, there was no doubt about it... It felt ominous. Whoever it was certainly had killing intent, but weren't acting on it.
"Why don't you turn around and shake my hand?" A voice, dripping with malicious intent, asked. You froze up, but casually turned, and placed your hand in the person's. Gaster, still a shadow, was glitching behind him. You realized that this person had no skin... Because it was all bone. He was a skeleton. A sound that you were too embarrassed to mention to yourself erupted from his hand. "Hahahaha, a whoopee cushion. Gets 'em every time."
Any of the scariness faded away. You could have sworn he wanted to kill you, but after looking at him... he seemed incapable of it. He grinned at you. He was around your height, which shocked you- You expected to be shorter than Toriel, but not a skeleton. Wait, was he a he? Can skeletons be male?
"'Sup? I'm Sans. I see you're in a ton of confusion. A SKELE-ton."
You couldn't help yourself. You laughed to the point of crying. "That was terrible!"
"But you're laughing." Sans' eyes seemed to change shape as he raised his....eyebrow? "Which means it must be pretty good."
"Um, quick question. Are you male? You sound really like one."
"Wow, kiddo. I'm insulted. You think that I'm a male just because I sound like one?" His grin fell from his face. You panicked, attempting to make him feel better.
"I...I mean, of course you're female! You have very pretty bones. I mean, you're very feminine!" Again, you stumble over your words. It felt like you had no social skills whatsoever.
"Relax, kid. I'm a male."
"But..."
Sans raised an eyebrow. "Would you like me to prove it to you?"
...But...
"I'm just kidding, I don't have human genitalia, or the organs to match."
"Are you even a human skeleton?"
"Heh. I dunno, now that I think about it. I guess I just resemble a human skeleton." Sans shrugged. "Anyways, you're a human, right? Shoulda asked that first, woulda been easier."
"Shoulda, coulda, woulda, didn't. And it depends on who is asking."
"You came from the ruins, right?" His grin was still not back, and it was unsettling. The way this skeleton was staring at you made a little voice nag at the back of your head, saying that there was something you should remember.
[Sans,] Gaster reminded you.
Sans...Sans! The very first word you remembered. The only one.
"S-Sans!" You gasped, out loud. Sans seemed a little spooked by it, as if you calling his name was unexpected.
"Uh, yeah? Need something?" He shoved his skeletal hands in his pockets and looked at you, with the same grin he first gave you on his face. Skull. Or face.
"I just.... I know that word. Name, it's a name now... I woke up, and I knew it." You tried to explain, but you unfortunately only confused the situation further.
"Huh. Didn't know I had a fan. You must be a BONE-afide hardcore one, to fall all the way down here." He winked at you, and you had to laugh it out before you could get back on track. Gaster was urging you forwards; you could feel it. To be honest, you wanted an explanation of why Gaster was here. Why you knew him and trusted him. But, there was more than one skeleton in the closet. You chuckled to yourself slightly.
"It's not like that- I have amnesia, you see. And I kind of woke up with just, well, your name on my mind."
"I see."
"So, um, where am I?"
"On your way to Snowdin. Can I ask ya a quick favor, there, bud?" The skeleton sounded tired, but you paid no attention to it. The cold was making you tired, too.
"Y'see, my brother is hunting humans. He's never actually seen one, but that can change today. He'd never harm a soul- I just want you to, kinda, y'know, humor his needs. Let him have his fun." Sans smirked. "I'll keep an eyesocket out for ya if you do this for me."
"I'd be more than glad to, Sans." You smiled back at him. "Anything I can to help out a friend.~"
"Friend, huh...?" Sans' face went dark, for a split second, but it seemed to be mind tricks. Even though you knew it wasn't your mind tricking you, you wished it was. You'd just pretend you didn't see it. "I like the sound of that." He looked up at the sky. "Heh, there's my brother now. Just go right on through the gate- I'll catch up."
You did as he asked, and noticed that in this area, there was a lamp and a...station? of sorts.
"Mind if I ask you to hide behind that lamp?" Sans whispered, from behind you. You jumped- you hadn't expected him to catch up so quickly. You didn't even hear him, despite last time. You also didn't feel his presence behind you. Could he somehow hide it?
"No problem, friend." You repeated. It seemed to have some sort of an effect on Sans, but you once more ignored it. You stood behind the conveniently-shaped lamp.
"SANS!" This voice was extremely loud.
"What's up, Papyrus?" The tone of Sans' voice was smug.
