After reassuring Alphys and Metatton you could handle Gaster, they went home.
They had woken up Sans, who refused to look at you. He had a look of self-loathing on his face, and you could tell he blamed himself. He didn't want to talk, and he didn't argue when you told him to go home and get some rest. You promised to swing by in the morning.
After they were all gone, you turned to the Gaster that laid quietly on the floor. Kneeling down, you picked him up, bridal-style.
He was heavy but lighter than human beings. He weighed as much as 3 bags of milk.
He was silent; there was no light in his eyes. Yes, the light in the skeleton's eyesockets tended to go out when they slept. It was like shutting your eyes.
This was Gaster's place. An abandoned corporate building. You made your way to the elevator, and noticed small white tags on the buttons. One read, Bedroom.
You clicked it.
The view up there was amazing; there was a nice, soft bed, which you put Gaster in.
He was awake.
"I know you can't forgive me," He whispered. "I hurt you using other people, and when that didn't work, I hurt you directly."
"I can forgive you." You turn away from him. "You're the reason I'm here. The reason I have air in my lungs, and aren't dying eternally in the judgement hall. You've saved my life three times; I owe you one more 'token of forgiveness.' You can only screw up once more, okay? After that, no more."
"Hunh... You've always been this way, haven't you?" You feel his skeletal fingers brush through your hair. "Won't you stay with me? I promise I will hurt you no longer."
Gaster would keep to his word. He wasn't one to break promises.
"Fine." You mutter. You're still angry at him for the nightmare; but he did give you this life, more than once. You couldn't be mad at the monster who made you.
He raises the blanket, and you get in. He instantly starts cuddling you, spooning you. He then begins to emit heat, which is a pleasant surprise.
"It's a type of magic I've been working on." He murmured. "To make me feel more human towards other humans. With this, both Sans and Papyrus will be able to comfort other people."
Gaster was always concerned with his sons; never did a minute go by when he wasn't thinking of them.
Never did a minute go by when he wasn't thinking of you, either.
"I've been working on many types of magic that will help us; I hope it helps them greatly."
"Why did you do it?"
"Excuse me?"
"Why did you try to break me?"
"..." Gaster was silent for a bit. "Because you... If I tell you, it would trigger a MASS RESET. Do you think I haven't tried already? Something wants you to continue down the path you're going, but it can't just RESET. It doesn't have a SAVE point. It gets angry when other things are involved."
"What is it?" Gaster probably wouldn't say any more about why.
"It's mortal. It's killable. It's human." He sighed. "That's all I know. But, it won't be killed. It refuses to die. We've faced it once; twice; probably more... it all blends together, you know?"
Yeah. You knew. You knew all too well.
"I'm not going to try to stop you anymore." He says. "There's too much to lose. There's so much we're going to lose. At least I can have another world with you, even if you're not mine. Even if it's all the same. Even if we have to repeat it a thousand times... even if it never stops...I'm just happy you're here."
For once, you felt like you understood Gaster's actions.
