The gang sat around the Curtis boys' kitchen table, passing dishes around to one another for them to put food on their own plate.

Dallas was missing, however, this didn't come as a shock to anyone. It was just..different.

Different in the way where you ask yourself if this is to happen more often than every once in a while.

Ponyboy's POV
Dallas was doing good. He actually came around quite a bit. Sometimes he'd even crash at our place. Johnny, too.

But it only took a good hour in one day for everything to go wrong. And that day just had to be Darry's birthday.

Here's how it all started.

2 days before.

"Hey Dally. Johnny." Darry said as the two boys approached his house that afternoon.

"Hey Darrel." Said Johnny before making his way inside.

Dallas stayed behind and smoked a cigarette.

"Been doin' good?" Asked Darry to Dallas as he set his newspaper aside.

"Yeah man. Stayin' out of trouble and whatnot." Replied Dallas.

"Been hangin' around here a lot lately. Maybe that's a good thing." Darry stated then chuckled.

"Yeah man. I like being here. It's nice. You guys are cool." Dallas said with a slight shrug of his shoulders before putting out his cigarette.

"Everyone's inside?" Asked Dallas.

Darry nodded. "Yeah. They're playing cards."

Dallas nodded some and then headed inside and Darry remained outside and picked up his newspaper to finish off his reading.

That Night

"Alright. I'm off to bed. Don't be too loud." Said Darry to all the boys.

Darry had always said this. But not even the noise of 6 other boys would awake him unless it was gunshots.

They played poker, watched cartoons, and the oldest drunk a bit of beer too.

After Two-bit and Steve left, Soda headed to bed, laying himself in Darry's room since he wanted Johnny to have a comfortable night's sleep and rest every now and then.

Then went along Ponyboy and Johnny who went to his room and slept together.

Dallas relaxed back onto the couch, kicking his shoes off and let his leather jacket keep him warm through the night.

And then suddenly a knock at the door.

It wasn't a loud one, nor an eager to get in kind of knock. Just a casual knock.

Dallas pulled himself up and off the couch, answering with a hello.

But nobody replied.

He then opened the door a bit, suddenly realizing it was Darry's girlfriend Lilah. Short for Delilah.

He let her in and she thanked him with a smile before entering.

"Hi, Dallas." She said in a tired but sweet and shy voice.

She never really acted out around Dallas but only felt shy around him.

"Hey." He said as he made his way back onto the couch and laid down.
