Chapter 3
A violent shove yanks me back to consciousness and I rip my eyes open to see what had invaded my already unpleasant sleep.
A dirty blonde haired boy stands over me and I groan as I lean forward slowly. My fists begin rubbing the sleep out of my eyes so I can see clearly. When my eyes finally focus, the dirty blonde haired boy smirks at me.
"Holy shit!! Travis!!" I squeal in excitement. My older cousin chuckles at my weary state of shock.
"Hey Karleigh, Mom said you were in town." Travis says with a smile. The corners of my mouth drop and I stare blankly at him.
"Did she?" I clear my throat. "Did she happen to mention how long I'm staying here, and why?" The tone of my voice is flat and emotionless. Travis's eyes show a hint of concern but he attempts to mask it with a smirk.
"No, but she told me how much of a pain in the ass you are." He teases and I almost smile.
"Wanna hang out today?" Travis suggests. For a moment I consider rejecting him but I can't stand sitting here alone to dwell on my pitiful thoughts.
"Sure, Travis just give me a few minutes to get ready." I mumble as I climb out of bed. Behind me, I hear Travis let out a small laugh as he takes in my appearance and I turn around and shoot him a glare. My feet carry me to my closet and I stare down at my suitcases, that I have yet to unpack. Maybe if I don't unpack them, then I won't have to stay here.
Travis sits down on my bed as I gather a wad of clothes into my hands, not bothering to look them over, and head to the bathroom.
I pull my clothes on over my head and stare at my reflection in the bathroom mirror. After observing my hair momentarily, I decide to actually style it today, rather than leaving to form a rats nest like yesterday. When I've finished styling my hair, I take one final glance in the mirror.
"Jesus, Karleigh, hurry up!" Travis calls from my room and I roll my eyes.
When I step into my room, Travis's eyes scan over me and he grins.
"What the fuck are you cheesing about?" I growl and he chuckles at my feistiness.
"Nothing, you've just grown up that's all, little cousin." He teases me and I scowl. He knows how much I hate it when he calls me that.
Travis leads me outside to his car that's parked in front of Aunt Jocelyn's house. Shock overtakes my features as a shiny silver Audi R8 sits in my Aunt's driveway. I don't bother to ask Travis how a 24 year old college student can afford such a luxurious car, I just continue to gape at it.
"Damn Travis!" I exclaim as I climb in to his passenger seat. His laughter fills the car and he revs the engine, provoking a smile from me. I playfully punch my cousin on the arm and gaze out the window as Travis drives into the inner part of the city.
Everything is passing in a blur. "Where exactly are we?" I question as Travis pulls into what seems to be a gas station, but looks extremely run down.
"I need gas and a snack, you need anything?" He asks me. I almost say no just to keep my bitchiness in tact, but then I remember that Travis has done nothing wrong to me--only my mom and aunt.
"Cherry coke please and thank you." I tell him as I pull a pack of cigarettes from my purse along with a lighter. Travis shoots me a look of confusion but I ignore him and hop out of the car. Travis gets out of the car as well and enters the convenient store. I walk to the corner of the building and cup one of my hands around my cigarette as I bring my lighter towards my lips to light it. Smoke erupts from the end of my cigarette as I take a long slow drag off of it. With two fingers I hold onto my cigarette and my eyes take in the surrounding scenery of buildings.
