Chapter 65
With the weight of the dog now off of me, I lift myself from the ground and dust my clothes off. My eyes stake a permanent glare towards the golden haired dog to prevent eye contact with Marcus.
"Karleigh, hey..." Marcus awkwardly greets, scratching aimlessly on the back of his neck.
My eyes flicker away from his dog and take in his lazy appearance. He's wearing a thin, white v-neck shirt with a low slung pair of basketball shorts. His blonde hair is ruffled as if he just rolled out of bed.
Without saying hello, I raise an eyebrow at him."Is this your dog?"
A long huff of air pours from his plump lips and he gives a nervous laugh. "Uh, yeah. Tucker here, is my golden retriever..." Regret fill his tone and I try not to pity the poor guy.
My stare darts to the panting dog, who is now sitting properly next to Marcus's foot, then my yes move back up to Marcus's face.
With a pitiful sigh, I purse my lips at him. "I'm gonna go inside now." I pointlessly tell him and continue to cross the yard to my doorstep.
"You...you live here?" Disbelief is laced within his words and I glance back at him from over my shoulder.
"Problem?" My eyebrow reflexively raises.
Marcus's eye take in the appearance of the house.
"Nope. No problem, it's just I never recalled you living here before." He simply states and I takes few steps away from my front door.
"This is my aunt's home, and I live with her." My explanation is short and sweet, just how I like it. Marcus chuckles and looks behind him, down the street.
"That's where I live." Marcus tells me while pointing to a grey house a short distance down the road.
"You're telling me this because...?"
"Funny, I don't recall you being this rude the last time we met." He says with a charming smile. His words bring a small smile to my lips and I give a small laugh.
"Funny, I don't recall you being so desperate last time we met...Oh wait." I tease with a playful smile on my face.
Marcus's lips part just as he's about to speak, and my front door swings open causing both of our attention to snap to my doorway.
Aunt Jocelyn comes padding out the front door and stops dead in her tracks as she takes in the scene in front of her. Her shiny blue eyes look at Marcus, then back to me.
"I'm just about to run to the store." She calmly notifies me and I give her a curt nod.
"Hello Jocelyn." Marcus calmly greets me aunt. She looks over at him and forces a polite smile. "Marcus, lovely seeing you again." She hesitantly replies. The tension between the two of them is uncomfortable and I feel as if I'm being left out of a fairly important secret.
"Karleigh why don't you show Marcus inside." Aunt Jocelyn politely offers.
"He was just leaving."
"I'd love to."
The two of say simultaneously, and our eyes meet in confusion.
"Sure, come in."
"I should get going."
We both speak over each other again. A giggle escapes my mouth and I press my hand against my lips in order to stifle my laughter.
"Just come on." I nervously tell Marcus and lead him to the front door. Over my shoulder, Aunt Jocelyn watches the two of us enter her house. Our eyes meet for a brief moment, before I turn away, closing the door behind me.
