Chapter 97

Harry's POV

This is exactly the reason why I was trying to prevent things from going further. It's hard to resist Karleigh though, once she starts taking her clothes off. That wasn't the issue though, the problem was when she started to take off mine.

The bruises along my skin are nothing but noticeable, and I knew she was going to come across them eventually. I confessed to her as much as I possibly could as she demanded answers.

Hopefully this won't effect her mood while we're out at dinner with her family. The restaurant in the city is lovely and Jocelyn spent ages trying to locate the perfect place.

Karleigh sits silent in the car on our drive into the city for her birthday dinner. Her eyes flutter closed, her head leaned against the window and she angles away from me, towards the window so I cannot see her face. Her legs are curled up into the seat and her hair is draped over her face. My fists are clenched around the steering wheel tightly as I mentally re-live the brief quarrel we just had.

She's trying to act like she's asleep but I'm not stupid, I know her better than she thinks. Eventually she drifts off and I notice the change in her breathing, confirming that she's actually unconscious.

Prying one of my clenched hands from the steering wheel, I reach over the console and rest my palm against her thigh.

I know she's frustrated because she's concerned for my health but I can't handle the distance she's putting between us even though we're in this small spaced car. Her breathing is light and her hair is shielding her face from me, I fight the urge of reaching up and tucking the hair begin her ear.

The sky is cloudy and grey, although it's only around 3 in the afternoon. It's overcast and looks as of it's about to rain. We're only about fifteen minutes away from the restaurant and I know Jocelyn will murder me if I'm late.

My foot presses down onto the gas pedal slightly, increasing my speed so I'm sure to make it to dinner promptly. Karleigh is unaware of the guests her aunt has arranged to attend the dinner. One can only hope she doesn't make a scene with some of the people she'll see.

The traffic isn't nearly as bad as I thought it'd be, considering how deep into the city we are.

The tall restaurant building comes into view and I pull into the parking lot. Signs offering vallet parking are spread throughout the entrance of the parking lot. I ignore all of them and park my car near the back of the lot. Putting the car into park, I peer over at my sleeping Karleigh.

My hand reaches up and strokes the soft skin of her cheek. Her eyelids flutter and open slowly. Those deep blue orbs stare straight ahead and she finally turns to look at me.

"I'm sorry." I tell her.

"For what?" she sighs.

"I was going to tell you, I just didn't know how..." I murmur by she doesn't respond. "Everything was going so good for you, I just didn't want to ruin that." I add.

A grimace is etched into her face and I want to smooth away her worry but I don't.

"It's not your fault, Harry." She whispers coldly.

I look away from her, not able to handle her emotionless facade.

"Then why do you seem so angry?" I beg.

Her voice comes out in a strangled tone. "I'm not angry, I'm hurt." She corrects me.

"I don't want to hurt you." I say, looking back over at her.
