Chapter 25

Karleigh's POV

When I wake in the morning, my feet shuffle against the floor as I make my way into the living room. I run my finger through my ratty hair and regret staying up so late last night. Aunt Jocelyn is smirking at me from the kitchen, in her bath robe with a mug of coffee in her hands.

"Did you make a cup for me?" My voice is tired.

"Actually Karleigh, I did? Good morning." She greets me friendly. I have no fucking clue why, considering its early as hell.

Ignoring her politeness, I roll my eyes. "What time is your dinner thing?" I ask.

"Be ready by six." She instructs me and I want to protest, but decide against it.

The scowl on my face is quite obvious and Aunt Jocelyn laughs at my expression. "Do you not like Anne?"

"Good heavens, what would give you that impression," I say in the most monotone voice I can manage. Aunt Jocelyn chuckles and I leave her presence and head back to my room.

I plop down onto my bed and stare blankly around the room unsure of what to do in my desperate time of boredom. I don't feel like driving that fucking stick shift right now, so that won't work. My eyes fall onto my laptop and I decide I'll call Angelyse.

She answers the Skype call but there's a lot of movement and I can't really understand what's going on. Finally Angelyse settles her laptop down somewhere and I take in her setting. Like usual, she's in her bedroom but she is not alone. I squint, trying to get a better observation of the person in her room. Then it dawns on me, it's Jacob.

"Um, hi?" I state.

"Kaaaarleeeighh!!" Angelyse cheers and I grin. "Look who's here," she's says while tilting the laptop towards Jacob for a brief second.

"Hello Jacob," I call out and he smiles a flashy, white smile and waves.

"Have you two fucked yet?" I blurt and Ang shoots me a glare. Jacob looks shocked, and his eyes flick between me and Angelyse. I take my bottom lip between my index finger and thumb, pinching it to prevent myself from laughing.

"Oops, my bad." I mumble.

"Anyways, Karleigh, what compelled you to call me?" Angelyse asks

"Compelled?" I repeat her, "Who are you and what have you done with my best friend." I demand, playfully. Angelyse giggles and shrugs.

"Don't panic, it's still me! I'm just trying to prepare myself for college by using a larger vocabulary." She explains with a wink. I exaggeratedly throw my head back in laughter. "You're so adorable, Ang." I smile. Jacob is chuckling in the background. "Speaking of college, please tell me you're coming back to Georgia for college." Angelyse pleads.

"I really don't know right now, Ang. College is the last thing I want to think about right now... I still have time." I tell her, without making eye contact.

She sighs a sad sigh, and stares at me. "I miss you, Ang..." I say.

"I know. I miss you too, Karls." Her words are meaningful, but I can't help but frown. The way she said Karls, it just didn't have the same ring to it as Harry. And here I am again, back at square one, Harry.

"What? What is it?" She questions, probably because of my expression.

"It's nothing it's just... It's nothing." I don't want to bother explaining.

"That's bullshit. What's wrong?" Her voice is more stern this time, and I know she means business.

"Well I haven't talked to Harry for about two days now. I don't think I can...be with him. He deserves better than, me. I ran into him at the library yesterday, but he didn't see me cause I snuck out." I tell her, ashamed. Angelyse's lips are pursed and I know she's going to scold me.

"I told you not to fight this. What are you doing?" She rhetorically asks, "fighting it." She finishes her rant. I stare at her the entire time, as does Jacob. He makes eye contact with me from the background and does the crazy sign while pointing to Angelyse.

I giggle and Angelyse pauses. "What?" She asks.

"Nothing. Keep going." I say, but she ignores me and turns around to glare at Jacob. We both explode into laughter and Angelyse pouts.

Angelyse shoves Jacob lightly and he grabs her wrist, causing her to giggle nervously. They stare into each other's eyes for a moment, before Jacob kisses her palm and releases her hand. Weariness fills my body as I watch them, and I know that as much as I'd love to keep up this conversation, I need to take a nap before this dinner.

And that's exactly what I'm going to do.

"Ang, I'll call you back later." Before she can protest, I end the Skype call and lay back on my bed. A long sigh escapes my lips and my eyelids become heavy. I do not, in the least bit, want to have this stupid dinner. It's only 11:30am and I'm already exhausted.

Harry's POV

A strong vibration moves throughout my cell phone and I glance down at it. My mother's name is written across the screen and I know I should answer her back. Hesitantly, I slide to unlock my phone and read her message.

*Remember, 6* is all it says! and I can't help but roll my eyes at her persistence.

*Where are we going again?* I reply. A short moment later, my phone buzzes again.

*Casual clothing, nothing too fancy.* She tells me.

Again, I type. *Where are we going again?" Maybe she didn't understand my question the first time. I wait around for my phone to buzz, but the buzz never comes. Jeez, my mother can be a pain in the neck sometimes. All the time.

She's obviously trying to hide something. Maybe I should go about this differently. So I try another tactic.

*Whats the address, I'll meet you there.* I text her, and my phone immediately vibrates.

*Robin and I are picking you up.* She says and I groan loudly. The front door opens and Niall steps in and raises his brows at me.

"You okay, mate?" He asks and I shrug. "It's my mother, same as usual." I complain and Niall chuckles. Only now that he's completely inside of the apartment, do I realize that someone is with him.

"Niall, who's your company?" I ask.

"Oh, Mandy this is my roommate, Harry. Harry, this is Mandy." Niall introduces us and she gives me a smile, which I politely return.

"Nice to meet you." I say. "Likewise." Mandy murmurs. Her long blonde hair cascades down her shoulders, and it dawns on me that she's the girl from the party that Niall's been chasing. The thought of the party makes my stomach church, and I remember the way that Karleigh didn't answer or return my call.

I casually stand from the couch and make my way to my bedroom, up the stairs.

A ray of sunlight flickers off of something onto my wall, creating a radiant beam of light. I follow the beam of light to my dresser and realize that it's from a CD. Skeptically, I take the CD into my hand and insert it into my radio that sits near my window. After a moment of silence, calming music fills the room and I recognize the song Imagine by John Lennon.

The song puts a smile on my face, I love how much of an activist that John Lennon. I press the next button on the radio before the song can finish and another song begins to play. The voice is familiar, and I assume it's John Lennon once again, but I've never heard this song.

"Hold me darlin' come on listen to me, I won't do you no harm. Trust me darlin' come on listen to me..."

The words to the song capture my attention, and only Karleigh is in my head. I don't know how I can't handle much more of her invading my thoughts.

My feet carry me to my closet and I start getting ready for dinner, while enjoying the rest of the music on this old CD.
