Chapter 46
Karleigh's POV
From outside the bedroom window I can hear Harry honking his car horn repeatedly. A small giggle escapes from me as I gather my few belongings and rush down the stairs. I asked Harry to take me home, but I'm not exactly sure why considering I'm dreading the confrontation I'm bound to face with my mother.
Niall is slouched against the couch as I turn the corner into the living room. "Bye Niall." I smile at him and he glances up at me. "Better mood, I see." He nags me, mentioning my pissy behavior from last night.
I flick him off and walk out the front door, sprinting to the parking lot so Harry will stop beeping his fucking horn. I jump in the car and jokingly glare at him.
"Enough with the fucking horn." I groan and laugh at the same time.
Harry chuckles and it sounds musical to my ears. I stare at him, a dreamy feeling overwhelming me.
"What?" He grins.
Forcing myself to tear my eyes away from him, I shrug. "Nothing."
He rolls his eyes and turns on the radio. The volume is low, but audible. I open my mouth to say something to Harry but quickly shut my mouth when a few words from the song capture my attention.
"Whatever gets you through the night, it's alright, alright..." I stare blankly at the radio as the words pour from the speakers.
Harry sings along in his angelic voice that sounds much better than the radio.
"Don't need a watch to waste your time oh no, oh no. Hold me, darlin', come on, listen to me I won't do you no harm..." His voice flows throughout the car and I am gaping at him. He trails off and flicks his eyes between me and the road.
"What?" He asks again.
"Is this the... the song you sang me last night?" I stutter. Harry's face turns serious and he stares ahead at the road. He seems slightly nervous and his cheeks are slightly flushed.
"Uh, yeah. I heard it recently and it reminded me of..you." He confesses.
A stare at him for a moment longer, before I lean over the arm rest and kiss him on the cheek. "I like it, the song." I tell him. He smiles and continues singing.
I relax back in my seat and listen to his beautiful voice serenade me for the remainder of the drive.
"Trust me darlin' come on." He sings. And I do, I do trust him, I'm not quite sure why but I feel safe with Harry. I trust him.
***********************************
I stand in the driveway, and watch Harry drive off down the street. Vile rises in my throat the closer I get to the front door and think about facing my mother.
The door doesn't open before I open it, like I had suspected it would. I kick up the corner of the door mat and grab the key that is back under there. Grabbing the key, I unlock the door and step into the house. As best as I can, I try to stay quiet so they don't notice my arrival. No such luck, as soon as I step further into the doorway I see my mom and Aunt Jocelyn lounging on the couch. Both of their eyes find mine, and I shift uncomfortably on my feet.
"Um hi." I break the unbearable silence.
"Hey honey, glad you're back." Aunt Jocelyn smiles warmly at me. Confusion must be obvious on my features. How can they sit here and act as if I didn't ruin yesterday's dinner. My Mom's eyes are no longer on me, but I can't stop staring at her.
"Did you go out drinking last night?" It's not really a question that my mother is asking, it's more of an accusation.
Fury builds inside of me, and I consider lying and saying yes just to piss her off. "No." I snarl at her.
Her eyes meet mine again, and I can tell she's surprised. "I stayed with Harry last night. Sober." I snap, wanting to prove a point.
Aunt Jocelyn's eyes are sparkling with pride. "Good honey, I'm glad you stayed with Harry. I understand you needed some distance."
Her words are considerate, and I'm glad she's more understanding than my Mom. Unwillingly, I smile at her, genuinely.
My mom is practically gaping at me, I'm not sure when the last time was that she saw me actually smile. "Alright Aunt Jocelyn, I'm going to my room." I ignore my mother's presence.
Aunt Jocelyn gives me a curt nod and I doing on my heels and walk to my room. Just as I close the door, I hear my Mom's muffled voice through the door. Immediately I know, I'm not meant to hear.
"...she's better off here, with you. She hates me, and she needs someone understanding in her life. I'm not that." My mom chokes on her sobs and I hear my Aunt hushing her and cooing calming words.
"I shouldn't have come Jocelyn, I'm only making things worse." My mother speaks again. Aunt Jocelyn's voice is low and I cannot make out what she replies.
I cannot bare to hear another word, so I step away from my bedroom door and grab a change of clothes. Disgust fills me as I realize I've been in the same clothes since yesterday. With my change of clothes in hand I walk to the bathroom and turn the shower water on warm. Steam fills the bathroom and the mirrors start to fog as I peel my clothes off and step into he tub.
From outside of the shower my phone begins to ring. "Shiiiit." I complain aloud, but no one can hear. "Just a sec." I mumble, to myself and to my phone although I know that the caller cannot hear me yet.
I whip the shower curtain open and dry my hands on a nearby towel. Once my hands are dry, I reach for my phone but it abruptly stops ringing.
"You've got to be shitting me." I groan and glance at the glowing screen.
One missed call from Harry
The screen reads, hmm, I literally just saw him like less than an hour ago, what's he need? I set my phone down and shut the shower curtain. I'll call him after my shower.
