Chapter 48

Karleigh's POV

My muffled laughter is the only sound in the room, aside from my small television that is perched atop of my dresser. An amazing episode of the twilight zone is playing and I can't stop laughing, although I've seen this episode ample times.

Beside me, my cell phone vibrates and I tear my eyes from the t.v. screen. Numerous emotions run though me as I see that I have a new text message from Scarlotte.

*Mind if I stop by? xx*

Do I mind? I'm not even really sure if I want her around me anymore. Then again, she's never done anything wrong to me, only her dickhead of boyfriend.

*Of course, need my address?* I type back.

*Yeah*

Still partly skeptical about inviting her over, I type the address of Aunt Jocelyn's house into the text message.

*5672 Maplewood Lane* I respond.

I don't receive an immediate response from her so I continue watching the Twilight Zone. Time seems to escape me as the show consumes my attention. The doorbell rings throughout the house, and I lunge from my bed to answer the door before my awful mother does.

I sprint down the hall and to the front door, Aunt Jocelyn shoots me a funny look. "Expecting company?" She questions and I give a curt nod before swinging the door open.

A smiling Scarlotte is standing before me with her shoulder length hair tied back into a ponytail. "Hey girl," she greets me and steps into the house. I smile at her. "Hey."

My intentions are to lead her directly to my room, without the process of an introduction but someone clears their throat. Scarlotte stops walking and smiles at my mother and aunt. "Karleigh, who is this lovely young lady?" My aunt asks.

"Aunt Jocelyn this is Scarlotte, Scarlotte this is Jocelyn my aunt." I wave my hands around as I introduce them. Scarlotte's eyes flicker to my Mother and I internally. "And that's my mom." I grumble and attempt to lead her away before my mom can speak.

No such luck. "I'm Catherine." My Mom speaks up and Scarlotte smiles politely. "I'm Scarlotte, pleasure meeting you two." Her friendly voice says. I roll my eyes and grab her arm to force her to walk away from them.

"God, they are so annoying." I rant as soon as my bedroom door closes behind us. Scarlotte laughs and jumps down onto my bed. "What are you watching?"

"That Twilight Zone." I inform her, wagering her reaction at the mention of the oldies classic television series.

"Ew, that black and white show from the caveman times." She disapprovingly teases me. "No dear, this show is fucking original. Much better than the shitty day time television that airs these days." I jokingly scold her and she laughs.

"So what brings you by, so randomly?" I casually ask her.

She shrugs, "Nothing in particular, you just happened to cross my mind and I wanted to hang out. You have any plans for tomorrow?"

"Uh, what's tomorrow again?"

"Saturday." She giggles lightly. "Oh yeah, I'm going to this family thing with Harry." A smile lights up across her face. "With Harry? How are things between you and him lately?"

I debate on whether or not I'm willing to tell her the details. Some protective instinct inside of me is reluctant to tell her about my Harry, because I don't want her having the same adoration for him as I do... Did I really just say my Harry? Wow.

"Things are good, we're dating now." The words don't necessarily roll off of my tongue, I'm still reluctant to tell her even as the words spill out. Too late now.

Scarlotte gapes at me, "You're serious?" Excitement hidden in her voice. I give a small nod and she grins. "Oh my gosh, I'm so happy for you. You two could double date with Todd and I, some time." Her suggestion brings a feeling of nausea over me, and my mouth gets dry.

"I suppose, if Harry's okay with it." I give her a vague answer, but it seems good enough for her.

Scarlotte's attention is now fixed on my t.v. "Mind if I change this?" She asks. My frustration builds at her lack of interest with this amazing show, but I don't fuss with her about it.

"Sure." I mutter and she quickly changes the channel. I'm not completely sure what show is now on, some shitty wives show, that I couldn't care less about.

An hour passes and we're still watching lousy shows on the oxygen network, but I don't complain much to Scarlotte. Her phone rings quietly in her pocket, and she digs her hands in her shorts to get it.

"Hey baby." She says into the speaker. I can't hear the voice on the other end of the line, but I'm not really to curious.

Scarlotte continues her conversation, but I tune her out and focus on the show.

"I'm with Karleigh." Pause. "Yeah, I'll ask her.

Within moments she hangs up and rises from my bed. "It was fun while it lasted Karleigh, but Todd's insisting on us going to dinner together. He said you should join us, if you'd like?" She hopefully invites me, but I nearly vomit just thinking about being in the same building as Todd.

"No, no thanks, I really can't. Thank you though, but I cannot." My words rush out of my mouth and Scarlotte laughs understandingly.

She pads to my bedroom door and I anxiously wave goodbye to her, she returns the gesture and exits. Out of curiosity, I lift the right side of my shirt and glance at my fading bruise that is still apparent on my side. I just wanted to know if it was still there, of course it is.
