Chapter 40

Karleigh's POV

I kneel down and reach under the doormat in search for the key to the house. To my surprise, the key is not hidden in its usual location. I stand back on my feet and knock on the front door for what seems like ages. Finally the door swings open, and I'm greeted by a smiling Aunt Jocelyn.

"Hi Karleigh." She says cheerily.

"Where'd the key under the mat go?" I snap. "I was knocking forever."

Aunt Jocelyn just keeps on smiling, and I can't help but feel annoyed.

"Why are you smiling so much?" I complain, and Aunt Jocelyn laughs. "Because it talked to your mother today." She explains.

"Again I ask, why are you smiling so much?" Not really finding the happiness in her explanation, if anything I'd understand more if she was in a bad mood after talking to my Mom.

"Oh hush Karleigh, I talked to your Mom and she said she's flying here for a visit." She explains, excitement obvious in her voice and across her face.

My shoulders slump. "You're fucking kidding."

The smile Aunt Jocelyn once had is now gone, and her eyes are wide. "What? I thought you missed your mom, I thought you'd want to see her."

"No, I don't miss my Mom, I miss Atlanta. Not her. Great so not only do I have to be in Dallas, where I do not want to be, I have to be in Dallas with my Mom." My words come out as a groan, and I hope Aunt Jocelyn feels bad.

She's frowning at me as if I just told her, her dog had run away. "Did you have fun with Harry?" She changes the topic and I'm partly appreciative of this. I nod slowly, unsure of whether or not I want to give details.

"Yeah, he's at his internship at the hospital right now, but I'll probably see him again this week." I ramble, and stop myself when I notice Aunt Jocelyn grinning cheekily.

"I cannot take you, you're too happy." I grumble as I stomp off to my room, slamming the door behind me.

My laptop, along with a pile of my laundry is strewn across my bed and I stride towards my bed. I open my laptop and see that I have numerous missed Skype calls from Angelyse, and I call her back.

Angelyse picks up the call almost immediately and I smirk at her through the camera lens. "Babe, where have you been?" She squeals and I chuckle.

"Holy shit Ang, let me fill you in."

I begin rambling on and on about how I met Scarlotte and I was nearly raped by her asshole boyfriend Todd. Then I explain how I went to Zayn's with Harry and Todd and Scarlotte were there. I tell her about how infuriated Harry was and how I let Harry touch me...down there. Most importantly I tell her about how my raging bitch of a mother is flying to Dallas to come visit me.

Angelyse stares at me for about a minute, then she finally opens her mouth to talk. "Well damn Karleigh, that's a lot going on." She lets all the information I just fed her, sink in. A slight frown takes over his features and she opens her mouth again before closing it.

She seems to ponder her thoughts for another moment, then she re-opens her mouth.

"Are you okay? After that guy... you know.." She trails off and I nod. "Yeah, I'm good." I mutter, giving her a weak shrug.

"Karleigh, be careful. I know how you are and I know you're very... carefree, but don't let anybody take advantage of you. I'm not there to protect you anymore." Angelyse vents and I sigh. I admire her concern, but between her, Harry, and Aunt Jocelyn I'm getting exhausted.

Before I have the chance to say anything else my phone begins to ring loudly. I pause what I'm doing, and glance at my glowing cell phone screen. "Ang, I'll talk to you later. Someone's calling me." I explain before disconnecting our Skype line.

I answer my ringing cell phone. "Hello?"

"Karleigh.." Travis's deep voice echoes though the phone. "Listen," he starts but I cut him off. "No you listen. I'm sorry for those hateful things I said the other day. I know that you were trying to stop Todd, I was just angry at everyone and everything. I'm sorry. I was a bitch." I confess. Travis stays silent on the other end of the line for a moment, he clears his throat.

"Thank you, I was staring to get worried that you'd never forgive me." He admits with a heavy sigh.

"Travis," I start when suddenly an obnoxious beeping sound chimes in my ear. I withdraw the phone from my ear and glance at the screen. Low battery, my phone alerts me.

"Hey Travis, my phone--" before I can even finish my sentence my phone powers down.

"Fuck." I say mostly to myself. I grab the charger, dangling from the outlet beside my bed and allow my phone to start recharging itself.

Travis is going to be pissed, he probably didn't even understand what I was trying to say before the phone disconnected. Thoughts of my Mom flow through my mind, and I sigh and stand up from the bed. Aunt Jocelyn is sitting cross legged on the couch in the living room, and I take a seat beside her.

"When's Mom coming?" I ask, fearing the answer. Aunt Jocelyn gives me a sideways glance, and a small smile appears on her lips.

"Tomorrow afternoon, I'm driving to the airport to go get her." Excitement is tinting her voice, and I'm trying not to bust Aunt Jocelyn's bubble. I know that her and my mom are very close, but that doesn't change the horrible relationship that I have with my mother.

With my thumb and index finger I start to massage the bridge of my nose. "How long?" I ask.

"Three days." Her answer is short, and her voice is low. My hand drops into my lap, and I gape at Aunt Jocelyn. "Fine." I groan.

I march back to my room, and lock myself in there for the night listening to my radio and an amazing album by the Rollingstones.
