SEND ME AN ANGEL

"As you wish princess. I'll join you in five."

As I kneeled down I observed how motionless this place is. Time doesn't affect it. People just come and go, more come than go throughout the years. I look the envelop I was holding; the paper's scrambled and tears have stained it. A deep sigh slips my lips as I place it on the soil, pressing it down on my mother's grave.

Letter:

Hey mommy... I've missed you. I'm so sorry I haven't been here in such a long time but I couldn't gather the strength to see you and my little brother side by side. You always told me that no matter where you are I should be writing to you. That an angel would always bring you my sorrows, my happiness, to you. So here I am, Mom. Please mommy, please! Please, Mom... Send me an angel, Mom. He left me, Mom. I can't let go of him. Please, Mom! I need that Angel now... I can feel my heart breaking, Mom. I can almost hear it. Bring him back Mom, bring him home... God, please! Don't let me relive that awful moment ever again. He can't be dead, Mom! We didn't have the time, it was stolen from us... Bring him home Mom. Send me your Angel Mommy...

A soft familiar voice interrupts me. Tears have been streaming down my face as I turned around to see Dante holding a bouquet of roses I had bought on our way here. He kneels next to me and looks at me affectionately.

"I didn't know you had lost your mom. I'm sorry, I've overheard some of your conversation with her."

"It's ok, Dante. I wouldn't want anyone else here with me right now other than you."

Dante places down the roses on my mother's grave as I take two of them to put on my little brother's grave. I stood there with my eyes wide shut, praying, talking. He didn't leave my side this time either. He sat there patiently holding my hand. The sun was setting as a few drops of rain started to crash on the ground. It was time to get back.

"Can we go home?" I murmur.

"Let's go to my place."

"No, it's ok. I should get back to mine, I'm better now."

"I'm not leaving you."

"You can't watch me forever Dante. You still have to get to the firm."

"The firm can survive without me for a little longer."

"Can we at least go to my place? I know it's not spacious or anything but if he's ok he might be coming to me."

"You're right. You would be the first person he would search for."

My hands feel cold. I feel empty, trying to process everything with no great success. How much longer until I get to know what happened to him? How long until I succumb into darkness or until salvation comes to me? The rain crashes violently against the Buggati's windscreen. I can see Colt's fingers wrapping firmly around the steering wheel while his eyes are fixed on the road. Unable to say anything that could possibly help him feel a bit better I choose to remain silent. Not long after we are back at my place.

"I need to park the car. Would you like to walk with me? I don't want to leave you."

"I'm fine Dante. There is no need for you to be worried for leaving me alone for a few minutes."

"I don't want to be too pushy today. I can just park here after all."

"You'll leave your car here?" I look at him shocked, unable to hide my surprise.

"Nothing's going to happen to it. Even if it does, it's just a car."

"Just... a car?"

"Just a car."

He got out of the car without thinking twice before placing his hand on my waist to guide me home. His touch was gentle and warm, more than any other time.

An awkward and heavy silence has filled the room, interrupted just by the tapping of Colt's fingers on the screen of his phone and sometimes by calls and messages I was receiving by Emily and Adam.

"Fuck!" I screamed from the bottom of my lungs, startling Dante.

"S? What's wrong?"

"What's not wrong Colt? He doesn't deserve to die like that! We don't deserve to end like that!"

"I know Val... It's been years since I had seen him so happy, so changed."

"Don't talk about him like that, please."

His eyes narrowed, looking at me confused.

"Like what?"

"Like he has stopped existing... Dante... I..."

"You don't believe he's gone."

"Is there any proof? Besides that dog tag? Is there? ANYTHING!"

"Val please, you're hurting yourself. I know it's early but they're analyzing the remains right now. I don't want you to deal with more pain than you already have."

"I don't care about myself Dante! I need to know what happened to him! I was his emergency contact... No one contacted me... He can't be-"

"I promise to you, I'll do whatever it takes to find out what happened. I promise, you hear me?"

He tried to reassure me but that wasn't enough for me. Steaming tears started streaming down my frozen face as my fists were clenching against his shirt. It seems to be a habit of mine nowadays, losing control of my emotions and just sobbing in his arms.

It's the only place in the world I feel safe right now. My breathing starts getting back to normal, finally allowing me to breathe deeply and fill my lungs with air I desperately needed. Not long after, Angus started growling. I gently tilted my head on the side to look at him without releasing my self from Dante's embrace.

"What's wrong with him?" Dante nods towards Angus.

"I have no clue," I say in a whisper as I move towards Angus before he rushes to the door showing his teeth aggressively.

"Don't, let me," He grabs my arm preventing me from moving.

"It's probably nothing," I give him a forced smile.

"Still, let me check, please?"

"Be my guest."

Colt moves towards the door with steady but strong steps as Angus starts barking aggressively. I hold my arm firmly with my palm trying to keep my calm before Colt gives me a wink and a half smile to help me relax. Two steps away, a knock on the door makes me gasp.

"Dante?" I say almost in a whisper.

"I'll take it. Stay."

The knock repeats even louder this time. Colt clears his throat before wrapping firmly his palm around the doorknob. As he turns it around I can feel the blood in my veins turning into ice and my breath stopping.

The door creaks finally revealing...
