Carter's POV
"Do I look okay?" Emily's cute, nervous voice asked from behind me. I turned around so I could take in her beauty before answering.
"You look amazing, like always," I said. She truly did. She was wearing a black, tight peplum dress, which fit her like a glove. I normally didn't like that kind of dresses, since they looked weird, but on Emily, on her it was completely different. She was also wearing a hybrid between a flat and a heel for shoes. They weren't that tall, but they still did her beautiful legs a favor of elongating. Her hair was down and curly from being washed.
"Are you sure it isn't too much or too little?" She flattened some non-exciting wrinkles on her dress and then she looked up at me.
I smiled, trying to ease her nerves. "You'll fit right in downstairs. Everyone will be in the same type of clothes, trust me."
"Okay, I just think it's a little much for a Christmas dinner," she said and looked down at herself one more time.
"Emily, this isn't a family get-together. This is my parent's business associates, business partners, and so on. I think the only family here is my grandparents." It was true. There was nothing cozy about this dinner. This dinner was only because they had to celebrate Christmas to look like a family. They had to have me here to brag about my good grades, show of my perfect teeth, and then talk about which college I've applied to, which, of course, is the same my father went to. This was a show off.
"Oh," was the only thing she answered to that. I nodded and reached out for her hand. She took it and we exited my room.
Emily was in a dress. She had bare legs and bare arms. I knew everyone could see what I could, but I knew no one was going to comment on it. Her arms were skinny and not the aspired skinny that were prominent in these types of groups. They were the 'a little too skinny' skinny. Her legs were too a little too skinny for it to be healthy. I knew it. Everyone would know it. I knew no one was going to comment on it since the more perfect you looked the better people liked you in these crowds. That and how rich you were. With the people my parents worked with, you don't have to be healthy nor happy, you just have to look good, keep up a good façade, and never let people completely in. I knew many of my parent's friends who didn't even let their spouse in. That always ended in a bitter divorce, by the way.
"Carter, say something, I'm nervous. I need to think of something else," Emily snapped me out of my thoughts by squeezing my hand. I looked towards her and smiled.
"They don't bite, trust me. I'll be there with you," I tried to console her.
"I said think of something else, not you comforting me with you being there for me. That means you know it's going to suck. Talk about something else, please." I chuckled at that. She was so nervous. I was too for that matter, I had never brought home a girl before. Not any my parents saw at least. Everyone was finally going to meet Carter's girlfriend, and if I knew my mother the way I thought I knew her, she had already gushed about how bright, pretty, sweet, and simply extraordinary she was to just about everyone here. Not that I was ever going to tell Emily that. She would die.
"Uhm okay, let me think. They guys wont let me hear about anything else than the awkward meeting you, Tyler, and I had at the gym," I spoke with a slight laughter. Emily giggled as well.
"Well, it was quite funny. I'll give them the right to tease. It also looked sort of wrong, I think," she said the last part a little shyly. Besides when we were in the moment of doing it, Emily was somewhat shy about sex and the things that went along with it.
