Chapter 20: The Good Girl's Promise
• EYEBALLS, EYEBALLS, MANY EYEBALLS •• KIMBERLY •
That night, Adrienne and Jamie came over.
They brought a teddy bear, chocolates, and get well soon cards. I tried to tell them that I was totally fine, but they treated me as if I had a sudden case of Ebola. My brother left my room earlier after we had that intense conversation.
I wanted answers and my brother had them, but I guess that has to wait now.
Adrienne sat on the edge of my bed and placed a hand on my shin,"Kimmy, are you all right? I mean you did almost drown and-"
She stopped and looked down. Her hands began to shake and I saw her chin wobble. Then she continued shakily,"-it's just, when you were going over the edge of-f the lake, I couldn't help but...I just in the month you been here, I feel like I've known you forever. When the thought that you might die crossed my mind, I lost it. I know you think I'm crazy but in the month I've known you, you have changed Ryder and my life in so many ways. I can't lose anyone else in my life."
When she looked up her blue eyes were filled with tears. Some trickled down her cheek and down her chin. I couldn't help but lean forward and wrap my arms around her. She rested her head on my shoulder and she sniffled.
When I first met Adrienne a few weeks ago, I thought she was insanely mental...well...I still think that but anyways, in all the happiness that she shows there is pain behind it. Maybe it was her craziness or her quirky attitude that made me like her as a friend, or maybe it was just her attitude towards Ryder, but she has grown on me.
More than I realized. It's funny how one month can change so much.
We pulled away when Andrew entered the room with a mouthful of ice cream. Jamie came in after him.
"Did I interrupt a sappy girl moment?" My brother joked, eating more ice cream.
"No, but when you walked into this room you became a sappy girl moment. What are you getting over a harsh break-up?" Adrienne accuses and points towards the pint of ice cream in my brother's hands.
"Um, no. Can't a boy enjoy his ice cream?" My brother raises an eyebrow. A smile is falling onto his face as he looks at the feisty little blonde in front of him. Old Andrew is back, kinda.
"Who says it was your ice cream? Did you buy it?" She accuses.
"No, but I'm eating it so it's mine."
