Your childhood had been pretty much perfect – you were close with your parents, you got on great with the rest of your family and you had a best friend who you adored.

James Potter was your best friend through and through and you wouldn't change anything about him.

The Potter's were practically your second family. If you weren't at your own house, then chances were, you'd be at the Potter's eating dinner or messing about with James.

It wasn't until Hogwarts, however, that it seemed as if James was going to forget all about you.

Throughout the first year of Hogwarts, you tried to stay around James and talk to him as often as you could but he wasn't as interested as he used to be.

He had made new friends. Meaning there was less time for you.

Second year wasn't much different, he still wasn't around and the frequent conversations turned into those once a week and even as little as twice a month.

When you got to third year, you had stopped being bothered about James.

He has his new group called the Marauders, and whilst you spoke to one of them quite a bit, James no longer seemed to be your best friend.

Remus was your friend, you got on with him well, he went out of his way to talk to you and often updated you on James as he was aware of how close the two of you had always been.

Remus understood that you were no longer as interested in James as you used to be, you had chalked your feelings for him up to a stupid childhood crush that was simply because of the amount of time you spent together – it would've happened to anyone.

James saw you around Hogwarts, and whenever he saw you it was because he was chasing the one and only Lily Evans.

You couldn't honestly you had ever spoken to her that much.

You knew who she was and what she looked like and, most importantly, that James was utterly infatuated with her.

It wasn't until your sixth year that James seemingly tried to be an active friend to you again.

He had made it a habit to come and find you during breakfast, always be there when you got out of your classes, walk with you to Hogsmeade and even spend some holiday time with you.

You weren't exactly so inclined to forgive him straight away.

After the summer with your parents, however, you were thinking about possibly pursuing it with him.

You and your Mother had had a long conversation during a day in the holidays, regarding James. She had reminded you how close the two of you were, how happy you were when you had him, and how he made it seem as if your life was such a better place.

Talking to her had made you think...properly think.

So, you were back at Hogwarts and waiting in the courtyard for James.

Soon enough, you saw him walking towards you – his top button undone, tie loosely around his neck, shirt sleeves rolled up, glasses covering his eyes, hair spiked up and the infamous smirk on his face.

For the first time in almost five years, when he made the move to hug you, you hugged him back.

He looked at you in surprise "Y/N/N? What changed?" he questioned, sounding completely and utterly gobsmacked.

You giggled lightly, grabbing your bag, "How about we go for a walk Potter," you suggested "I'll explain it all on the way."

He nodded his head, stuffing his hands into his trouser pockets as the two of you began to walk side by side.

"I spoke to my Mum, you know, about all of this," you began to explain things to him, "She made me realise that yes, you have messed up, more times than I could even count."

He sighed but nodded his head, deciding to keep silent.

"But even though you were a royal arsehole throughout practically all of our schooling days, you're seemingly making an effort again."

He smiled over at you "Y/N/N – I admit, I shouldn't have pushed you away or ran after Lily when I really wanted you," he breathed out "I was just so excited to have some new friends, and I guess I forgot about the one girl that was the most important to me," he explained.

"As I said, Potter you were a royal arsehole. But I do still care about you, I don't think I ever stopped."

Slowly, he pulled you into a gentle hug, "I won't mess this up this time."
