On January 14th, 2016, we lost the magnanimous actor, Alan Rickman, at the age of 69.

His masterful portrayal of Professor Severus Snape bewitched the minds and ensnared the senses of an entire generation.

On that quiet day in January, Alan's passing reminded us not only of the complexities in the character of Severus Snape but of the very value of life

On that quiet day in January, Alan's passing reminded us not only of the complexities in the character of Severus Snape but of the very value of life. It reminded us to appreciate what we had while we still have it.

And much like the Potions Master that Alan represented on screen, his passing encouraged us to never forget that life, though imperfect and, at times, cruel, is inherently good

To the true Potterheads, whose souls hover in the steam of Platform 9 ¾, partway between the magic of Hogwarts and the harsh realities of the Muggle world, this news left a noticeable scar

To the true Potterheads, whose souls hover in the steam of Platform 9 ¾, partway between the magic of Hogwarts and the harsh realities of the Muggle world, this news left a noticeable scar. And soon, across all nations and despite all differences, we raised our wands to you that day, Alan. Thank you for all you gave us, and for the legacy you left behind.

Lumos.

I end this with a quote from Emma Thompson, who played Professor Trelawney in the Harry Potter films.

What I remember most in this moment of painful leave-taking is his humor, intelligence, wisdom, and kindness. His capacity to fell you with a look or lift you with a word. The intransigence which made him the great artist he was - his ineffable and cynical wit, the clarity with which he saw most things, including me, and the fact that he never spared me the view. I learned a lot from him. He was the finest of actors and directors. I couldn't wait to see what he was going to do with his face next. I consider myself hugely privileged to have worked with him so many times and to have been directed by him.

He was the ultimate ally. In life, art, and politics. I trusted him absolutely. He was, above all things, a rare and unique human being and we shall not see his like again.
