WTF: Fanfiction Tropes

The Four Functions of FanFic

My personal grievance as a WattPotter (Wattpad user and Potterhead) (trademarked), is that they were ripping off basic fanfiction tropes without even thinking like a fanfic writer. By writing fic, you know the very point is:

1. To explore the possibilities.

2. To consider the questions that were left over.

3. To expand on the universe.

4. To creatively give the fans what they want without being so dang obvious.

Frankly, some story concepts are best left to the fans. A few of the themes in this play have been floating around the fandom for a decade. What the Cursed Trio seemed to overlook is that these ideas have grown in popularity because they never took themselves seriously. By making these vapid, soap opera-style concepts official canon (#NotMyCanon), the writers come across looking either frivolous, apathetic, or obtuse. None of which are good.

The fans don't want to believe that you're running out of ideas. Or that we could conceive of plots as good (or better) than the creator. If Jo - dear Jo - had written this herself, without influence, these issues would not have been an issue. However, the official sequel to the play will now, most likely, include a pregnant Ron Weasley. With wings. I mean, why not? Look what they actually gave us.

Delphi

As a character, Delphini Diggory is just preposterous, and I hate using that word. It took about half a page for us to discern that she's a Mary Sue to the nth degree.

Delphini, mmm Delphi for short, is super ideal, isn't she? Silver and blue hair... with tats! She's older, attractive, yet soop-mysterious. Totally skilled at magic, but, you know, never had a formal education. Did I mention she can fly? Of course, the main character has a crush on her. And, like yeah, she's Voldemort's daughter. I mean, she's over the top in like every way, and hangs out with pre-teens, but it's cool.

Who in their right mind thought this character belonged in Harry Potter? Who, I ask? WHO?!

Are there other examples of fanfiction tropes in the play, some that are directly pulled from the vaults of fanfiction.net? You can bet your boomslang skin, there are. We'll get to Delphi's Nutter Mom and Noseless Dad soon enough, WattPotters.
