Chapter 44

Although Sophie and I don't live together it is weird not having her sleep int he same room as me when we are under the same roof. I was actually kinda pissed at Mama the way she was going on about Caroline. Yes I loved her and yes she was always with me but she is the reason I went on my wild ways. Different girl in every town. I didn't want to get hurt again that's why I didn't do commitment, well until I met Sophie. She is my rock, she made he see relationships are good and they can be fun.
It was 2 in the morning and I couldn't fall over so I decided I would go in and see Sophie. I sneaked along the hall and opened her room door. She was fast asleep so I crept over and lifted the covers and slid in behind her, she stirred a little but didn't waken. I held her close and wrapped my arm around her waist and feel into a deep sleep.
I was awoken by my mama calling me to tell me breakfast was ready. It took me a few minutes to realise I was in bed alone, where was Sophie. I headed downstairs and she was sitting at the table talking to mama.
"Sleep well" Mama asked
"Like a baby" I said
"Yeah that bed in the guest room is helluva comfy" she said laughing. So was Sophie
"We didn't do anything we just slept" I said
"Boy, I know what your like. You were the same when Caroline stayed over. Always needing a cuddle" she laughed
I saw Sophie get a little pissed
"If y'all would excuse me I'm gonna get washed and ready. Luke I told you" she said.
Mama looked at me as if to say what does that mean
"Sophie wait." I said
"No you and your mama sit and talk some more about Caroline. I'm sure she is just delightful" she said walking out.
I didn't follow her I knew she was pissed and if I followed her now then it would end in an argument. I turned to mama and said
"Mama can you please stop talking About that god damn woman all the time. I'm with Sophie and I plan on being so for the foreseeable. Yes I loved Caroline, yes we were college sweethearts but that's in the past and that's where it will remain. You don't know the hell she put me through when we were together, you only seen the side she put on in front of you and she is probably still doing it with you. So I would appreciate it if you would give Sophie a chance because one day all going well she is going to be the mother of your grand babies."
For the first time my mama was speechless, but these things needed to be said.
"Luke honey I'm so sorry. I didn't realise I was doing anything. If you and Sophie want to share a room that's fine with me. I do like her she is a feisty one and I'm sure she knows how to keep you on your toes. I will speak to her and sort things out and if you don't want me speaking or meeting with Caroline I won't." She said
"That's all I want mama. The two woman I love getting along"
