I grabbed my sweats and pulled them on pulled a tshirt over my head
"Luke baby it will be ok" Sophie said
"I just got a feeling like I did when my brother died that something is wrong" I said
"Wait for me baby I will come with you" she said grabbing clothes
I got to the bottom of the stairs and there was two officers 👮‍♀️ 👮‍♀️ standing
"Mr Bryan, I'm officer Cartwright and this is Officer McGee, can we speak somewhere private"
"Yes certainly come through to the lounge" I said. Sophie followed
"What's wrong officer" Sophie said
"Ma'am, Sir. At 3am this morning there was an accident just outside Leesburg"
"Oh no not my daddy" I said
"Mr Bryan it's not your father, the person driving the car was Miss Caroline Boyer"
I room went dark and the next thing I knew on the floor
"Luke OMG are you ok" I could hear Sophie say
"Is she dead" I asked
"I'm sorry Mr Bryan there was no survivors and the scene of the accident, we will need someone to formally identify the body and as she has no family and you are registered as her next of kin as a result of being her sons father we need you to do that if you can sir"
I couldn't answer I could feel the warm tears running down my cheeks and I could Here Sophie sniffling. How..... Why? How on earth do I tell Thomas he will be absolutely heart broken it's his mama and he is only ten
"Ok, do you know what happened, was anyone else involved?" I asked
"No sir it was a single car accident, Miss Boyer was in fact well over the limit and collided with a telephone pole, she would have died almost instantly" the officer said
"She was drunk" Sophie asked
"Yes ma'am"
Sophie looked at me and I could tell she didn't know what to say
"Thank you officers I need to tell my son and family, can you give me your card and I will call you for the details"
"Here you go sir and once again I'm so sorry especially at this time of year"
"Thank you"
I showed them out and Sophie gave me the tightest hug
"Daddy is everything ok" I heard Thomas say
"Thomas go get your meemaw and I will meet you both in the living room" I said
"Ok daddy" he said running off
"Luke are you ok"
"I'm numb baby, what the fuck was she thinking driving drunk. What if Thomas had been in the car." I said
"Don't think like that baby"
Thomas came back with mama and she could tell by my tear stained face that something was wrong
"Luke honey is everything ok" she asked
"No mama it's not" I said
"Thomas honey come here and sit on my lap" Sophie said
When he was seated I said
"Thomas, you know everyone here loves you and that you are never going to be alone."
"Yes daddy"
"Well those officers where here to tell me something really sad and it's going to make you really sad but your daddy loves you and will do everything to protect you" I said
"Is mama ok" he said as his eyes filled. I think he knew
"No baby she is not. She was in an accident this  morning and I'm so sorry baby but she didn't make it" I said
He jumped off Sophie's knee and ran crying outside
"I will get him" Sophie said as she headed outside
