"Adrienne, could you set the table for me?", asked my grandmother, handing me some plates.
i started setting the table until i realized there were six plates, not five. I counted me, Marylin, Erme, my grandmother and Antonio. I wasn't a math genius but I knew there were only five of us.
I was going to call her out of the kitchen to ask why I had an extra plate, but I didn't know my question would be answered when the buzzer rang a few minutes later. I opened the door, expecting it to be Antonio, but saw a guy who looked to be my grandmother's age standing there. A smile made it's way on to my face. Wow. My grandmother had a boyfriend.
He looked to be your typical, older Puerto Rican guy with salt and pepper hair. "Hi, is Carmen Munoz here?" He had an accent. My grandmother had an accent too, but you could barely notice it. After all, she had been in the US for over 40 years.
"Yeah, uh, hold on." I found it so cute that she was dating again. "Abuela!", I called.
She emerged from the kitchen a few seconds later, drying her hands on a dish towel. I should've figured she was seeing someone because she looked super nice tonight. I mean, she always looked nice and put together but tonight she looked great. "Que tu quiere, Adrienne?" Then, she seemed to notice she had a visitor and quickly fixed her hair. "Oh, hello Javier."
Javier. So that was his name. Javier smiled. "Hello, Carmen."
My grandmother smiled too. I didn't know this guy but I could tell her made her happy.
"Javier, this is Adrienne. My granddaughter.", said Abuela. It was cute seeing her get all flustered for a guy.
Javier turned to me and shook my hand. "Its nice to meet you, Adrienne."
"Nice to meet you too.", I told him politely.
Marylin and Erme came out a bit later. "And this is my great-granddaughter, Marylin."
"Great-Granddaughter? Well, you coulda fooled me. You know you don't look a day over thirty five, Carmen."
It was funny because he wasn't really exaggerating that much. She did look pretty young for 56 going on 57.
Abuela giggled and blushed a little before moving on. Was this how I got when i was near Antonio? She gestured to Erme. "And I know you've already met my grandaughter's friend, Ermelinda."
Erme waved. "Hello, Mr. Ramos."
So, they had already met? Well, I guess we both had some explaining to do. I gave her a look that said so.
Abuela went to go get Javier settled and Marylin followed behind, leaving us alone. "So, I have explaining to do?", I asked with a raised eyebrow. "You never told me that my grandma had a boyfriend."
'Well, you never told me that you had a boyfriend.", she pointed out. 'Plus, I figured she'd tell you on her own."
She had me there. "Well..he's not exactly my boyfriend first of all..."
She rolled her eyes and smirked. "I mean, I would've much rather preferred you to marry Prince Royce, but oh well, more for me. Now, when do I get to meet this this Antonio guy anyway?'
"Whenever he gets here.", I said. The buzzer rang once again. "Or now.", I said with a smirk.
I open the door to reveal a smiling Antonio and let me tell you he cleaned up good. Not that he needed to "clean up" but let's just say i had a thing for guys in suits.
"Hey Antonio. Come in.", I said, gesturing inside.
He stepped inside. "You look amazing today, Adrienne."
