I didn't say anything, there wasn't much I could say. No, there was so much I could say and so little all at the same time, but I just saw Hayley, and her eyes. They stared up at me and waited, clouded with the same gloss I'd missed for what felt like ages. The same gloss that used to form over her eyes when she was in my arms, or when my lips were on her neck.
"Are you sure?" the three words must've just slipped out.
"Of course I'm sure." her smile faltered "Are you sure about what you said?"
"What?
"You know-" then the moment was gone and the whole party was broken down by one word.
"Police." and that sure as hell sobered me up. People all around us began running for any exit. Hayley looked up at me and her eyebrows furrowed together. I placed my hand in hers.
"Follow me." we went out the back door. I could hear the sirens in the drive way. They were getting quieter as we moved away. "Come here." I picked her up by the waist and helped her climb over the fence. I soon followed after her.
"Thanks." She whispered. It was dark and after a few minutes of pacing we stopped by a lamppost. The sound of sirens were far behind now.
"Ugh fuck, you are so annoying." Hayley's sudden outburst startled me, I leant off the post.
"What are you talking about Rhys?"
"You, you said you-"
"Loved you." she took a deep breath "I said I loved you," and I meant it, "I was falling in love with you when we slept under the stars and I knew the moment you left me that all I wanted to do was get you back." she didn't say anything. Fuck. She was just looking at me. I was just looking at her. God she's beautiful.
"You- I- I'm in love with you." She said it. She said the words. "You idiot, of course I love you." a relief filled laugh filled the street. I was sure Hayley was aware of the smile I couldn't wipe of my face, I didn't hide it.
"Say it again."
"I love you." she laughed the words and wrapped her arms around my waist.
"Again."
"I love you"
"Again"
"I love you." She shouted it as loud as she could, a huge smile broke out onto her face.
"One more time." She shot me a pointed look. "Please." I don't think she realised what it did to me, how it made me feel.
"I" her hands played in my hair and she brought her eyes to mine "Fucking love you." there was no smile in here eyes and this brought everything crashing towards me. I was no longer drunk, and in the cold wind and dark quiet street, nothing was perfect. But for the first time in years I didn't want it to be. This was enough, and one look in her eyes told me it would always be enough.
