"I was such a bitch today."
"What's new?"
"Stop I'm trying to confide in you."
"Fine." There was a slight pause. "Go ahead, baby." My stomach flipped. God did I love this. I lay on my bed with my phone pressed to my ear.
"Ryan, I just wish I could go back in time."
"I know baby, but you just have to shake this. Apologise to Lea tomorrow okay?"
"Yeah."
"Good. Now don't go all serious on me, it's weird. My names not Ryan."
"Yeah well my names not baby, Montgomery."
"I know that." I found myself smiling. The phone went silent, I think we were both thinking. This happened a lot, it's like I could feel he was thinking about me.
"We're doing it again." I said.
"I know. You need to stop."
"It's not just me Montgomery."
"Yes it is. You're mind raping me." I laughed.
"Yeah, and you're now single."
"Whatever. I heard Jordan wasn't seeing anyone."
"I swear to God Ryan don't play with me." I could hear his low laughter through the phone.
"I love teasing you." His laugh settled. I haven't had a late night conversation with him in a while. About a week, he's been so stressed lately. I've been patient, at least I've tried, but I've missed him so much. So, so much.
"Hey, so you love me right?"
"No I just said it as part of a big elaborate prank." He was laughing again.
"Ryan, I'm being serious." The laughing stopped.
"I swear to God Hayley if you're breaking up with me-"
"Chill." I was laughing this time. "The opposite actually."
"Go on."
"I want you to come for dinner this Saturday." There was no answer. "Ry?"
"With your parents?"
"Yep."
"Your dad?" I heard him gulp.
"Yes, Montgomery."
"He's a cop, he owns a gun, I've dry humped his daughter. Are you trying to get me killed?"
"You've find more than just dry-"
"Besides the point Hayley. He'll have my head for so much as looking at you."
"No, thats why I didn't ask you to come over last week-"
"Don't tell me he saw-"
"The giant hickey? Yes Montgomery."
"Shit."
"Breathe." God he's so dramatic. "Times like this I can really see how your best friends with Dan. You're bigger drama queens than-"
"Shut up Hayley."
"Hey I'm-"
"Fine."
"What?"
"I'll come." I was grinning like an idiot now.
"Thanks."
"Well I told you I loved you so I kinda guessed this was coming." We fell into another comfortable silence.
"So in three weeks my parents are leaving for there date night thingy. Remember they do it every month."
"You mean when they go have sex in a hotel room?"
"God Montgomery don't say it like that."
"Hey they're your words."
"Just so you know, I'm rolling my eyes." With a huge smile on my face, but he didn't need to know that. "Grace is going to Dan's before she goes to Iceland."
"Oh I forgot she's leaving in a couple weeks." I didn't.
"Yeah, she can get better treatment there. Dads leaving with her, so my parents really need their date week."
"Wait, they're gonna be gone for a whole week?"
"Yep."
"You better be inviting me over." I laughed.
"Someone's eager."
"Well of course I am. You gave me the green flag two months ago and we haven't had a chance to-"
"I know Ryan. I was there."
"Yes you were," Weirdo "but in all seriousness, I won't be mad if you've changed your mind, if you're not ready, I get it." Damn, I love this idiot.
"Ryan stop. I want you. Trust me I do. I can't get you out of my head and I-"
"I know." Of course he did, there wasn't a time he didn't. He got me, I got him.
"My mum won today."
"What?"
"We haven't been talking for a while because I was preparing for trial. I know I should've told you but that meant going into detail and that meant telling you about my sister and she didn't want me to tell you."
"And now?"
"We won custody. I'm staying with mum."
"That's great Ryan." I don't know what I'd be doing if he was telling me the opposite right now.
"My dad, it turns out last time we took him to court for- for what he did, he bribed the judge. He's in jail."
"Wait what?"
"He got charged with domestic abuse towards a minor and-" he was choking, I could hear it. My eyes were burning.
"You can tell me babe."
"My sister, he touched her Hayley." He was crying now, or at least on the verge. I could feel his hurt, a tear ran down my cheek. "My sister, he used to-" and it sounded like he was screaming into a pillow.
"Oh my God." I didn't know what to think. "I'm so sorry." I felt as if I needed to be with him. He's so strong and brave, hearing him like this was ruining me.
"God Hayley all this time, we kept it from each other, all this time I thought it was only me dad hurt." The tears were free falling. I wanted him in my arms, I wanted to scream I'm sorry. I wanted to tell him how brave he was. How it didn't show, how he wasn't scarred, not emotionally. How I loved him.
"Ryan, I'm sorry." It was probably the most cliche thing I could say, but it was true.
"Me too Hayley, me fucking too."
