Me and Ryan finally stopped teasing each other and managed to pick up my sister and Dan. Turns out they're worse than us. So forty-five minutes later we have finally arrived and no one has made a move to get out of the car.
"So what, do I introduce my self as Graces friend of boyfriend?"
"Don't ask me she's right next to you." he turned to my sister.
"It's just," he struggled to find the right words "there is a big difference between meeting my friends parents and meeting my girlfriends parents."
He's right there was a big difference. A big difference you'd think they'd have talked about.
"Well."' Grace nibbled on her lip, God she loved the attention. We'd stayed up all night talking about this last week, she knew her answer. "We're dating Dan. We'll tell my dad that." He smiled bright. I mean a big goofy toothy smile. Okay it was becoming a little creepy. As if reading my thoughts Dans smile dropped to a smirk.
"Cool." I rolled my eyes. Boys.
"Okay let's go." Ryan spoke from beside me. He walked around the car and opened the door for me. As I got down he whispered into my ear.
"We were cuter. I mean I told you on swings. Swings 60 ft in the fucking air. This guy asks her quite low on the ground, with a psycho happy grin on his face." I laugh at that.
"At least he actually asked her and I think it was cute." Ryan rolled his eyes. I could tell he was nervous, his nervous was rude. He didn't like anything or anyone and a silent scowl was etched on to his face. He looked hot though. Really hot.
"Is this it?" Dan asked
"Nah we're just standing outside a random door."
"Hey, nervous dicky Ryan is starting to show."
"Shutup Dan." I rolled my eyes.
"Just saying. Watch your man Hayley."
"Ha. Grace watch your- umm-guy you're dating." Ryan retorted. Both boys were glaring at each other. I placed my hand on Ryan's chest and pulled him in for a kiss. It was a slow, 'I love you' kiss, a 'calm down' kiss and it seemed to work.
"Say sorry." I whispered, to him. He gave me one last peck and turned to Dan.
"Sorry man." That won him a small nod.
"Okay." I took a deep breath and placed my hand in Ryan's.
The familiar tune of my household doorbell could be heard from where I was standing. There was a moment of pure apprehension, and then my smiling mum came to the door with Dad standing beside her.
"Hi I'm Greg. Come on in."
Ryan flashed his most heartbreaking smile and walked into the living room. We all followed and soon enough everyone was on the sofas waiting for my dad to shut the front door. He sauntered into the room and smiled, it was a practiced smile, I think he was just as nervous as the boys.
"So introductions." Greg rubbed his hands together and looked my way.
"Oh this is umm-"
"I'm Ryan. Hi sir. I'm Hayley's boyfriend."
"Really, how long has this been going on?" Greg arched an eyebrow. He was trying to act intimidating...... it was working. Ryan didn't shy away though.
"Just over three months, right babe?"
"Yep." I popped the 'p'
"I've never heard about you, and Hayley tells me everything. Must not be serious."
"Dad-"
"No I assure you it's serious." Ryan interrupted me again. Not that I minded, in fact, I wanted to sink into my chair right now and contemplate how many ways this could go wrong.
"I love your daughter and I promise you that this isn't just for now. Hayley isn't a for now type of girl. In fact she's the best at acting like she is, but I know she's not. I know somewhere she has everything she's ever wanted planned out all in a journal. I have a plan to."
"Really and what does it involve?" Greg asked.
"Maybe law, maybe med school- but definitely your daughter." He gave me a kiss on the forehead and I leaned in closer to him. If everyone else wasn't in the room right now, I swear I'd jump his bones.
My mother smiled "I'm definitely happy for you two." Greg nodded and smirked slightly. I felt Ryan relax beside me.
"Now Grace," mum came with a more calm approach. "I believe I've met Dan before. Does he need to re-introduce himself." This was her not so subtle way of asking if there relationship status had changed.
"Actually." Dan spoke up and smiled down at Grace. "Me and your daughter are-" Uh-oh. I know that face. Don't do it Grace. Word vomit, I can see it rising. Don't let the nerves win. Do not overthink this.
"Just friends. Me and Dan are still just friends." Shit.
"Oh." Mum frowned. "Are you sure?" Dan looked at her as if to ask the same question.
"Yes." She answered. Her voice was shaking. Dan looked hurt, really hurt. I think everyone in the room could sense the awkward situation. Well, everyone but Dad.
"Great now I only need to worry about one child having sex getting pregnant and dying."
"Dad." Me, my mum and Grace all shouted at the same time. He raised his hands in mock surrender.
"Hey. What did I teach you girls, sex leads to death." Ryan tensed up and slowly took his hand off my thigh.
"You are a virgin right Hay?" Everyone's eyes widened, including mine.
"Greg." My mum exclaimed.
"What it's a good question." He dismissed my mum's disapproving glare "Right Hays?" Grace new I wasn't and so did mum. That's it, no one else knew and it was a fact that if I lied, he'd be able to tell.
"Of course she is." Dan piped in. "If they were doing something I'd know." The room fell silent for a second and then my dads hearty laugh filled the room. Everyone let out a nervous chuckle, me especially. I could feel someone's eyes on me. I turned to see Dan. He was almost glaring at me.
"You're a funny chap." Dan's attention was drawn back to dad.
"Yeah probably one of Grace's funniest friends, right?" The emphasise on the word 'friends' was something I think everyone picked up. Well, everyone but Greg.
"Now that the needed interrogation is over." He stood up. "Let's go eat."
******
Well. Really well. Dinner went really well. My parents loved Ryan and Dan. I think after the interrogation dad loosened up and really gave the boys a chance. Dan was his usually funny self. Though every time he looked across the table to Grace his smile would falter. He avoided eye contact with me all night. I wasn't sure why.
Ryan, however, he was perfect.
Charming-"Mrs Rhys, this was truly an amazing dinner."
Smart- "Migraines are usually dehydration or too much sodium, you should get some cherries, or maybe potatoes they're high in potassium."
Funny- "I support arsenal Mr Rhys."
Okay... maybe the last one wasn't intended as a joke, but it sure went down a treat to my dad the Man U fan.
"I should get dessert ready, you and your friends can go to the living room."
"Are you sure you don't want any help Mrs Rhys?" Ryan asked.
"Of course not sweetie." My mum smiled lightly and Grace cleared the plates.
"Oh let me." Ryan took the plates form Grace. "I think Dans in the living room." He shot her a good luck smile and placed the dirty dishes in the washer.
"You did really good today." I wrapped my arms around his waist as he closed the dish washer.
"I'm glad, you have no idea how nervous I was."
"Actually I do. Dan was kinda accurate."
"Ugh" Ryan groaned and turned around to face me.
"I'm just saying dicky Montgomery does come out to play."
"I know, I know." He hugged me closer to him. "This really wasn't as bad as I though it'd be."
"Yeah." I rested my head on his chest. "Love you."
"Love you too."
"Well aren't you cute?" Mum stood by the fridge swooning. I rolled my eyes and buried my blush in Montgomery's t-shirt. I could hear him laughing and his chest shook beneath me.
"Ryan." My dads voice came into the kitchen. He stoped laughing. " "The women need ice cream, we must serve."
"Cool." He gave me a quick kiss on the head.
"Chocolate right?"
"You know it." I watched him disappear with my dad, and waved to them both when they jumped in the car.
"Some great guys we've got, right?"
"Yeah, great guys."
"Well me and your father are going to the hotel after this, he booked a spa retreat for about a week."
"What I thought that was later?"
"I don't know exactly it's meant to be a surprise."
"So me and Ryan have the house, alone."
"You and Grace do you mean?" I blushed.
"Yeah, me and Grace." Mum smiled at me knowingly.
"Just remember to use a condom and stay the hell out of mine and Greg's room." She smiled and walked back into the kitchen.
Holy shit. Tonight was the night.
