This is an AU of mine involving Steven Universe (property of Rebecca Sugar and Cartoon Network) and the Halo franchise (property of Bungie, 343 Industries, etc.) -Tiny

Before I can get to the theory part, there's a lot of explaining to do first. I've always wondered who put the diamonds in the ground. Gems are placed in the ground to grow and then be birthed from the stone they're planted in. But they don't just form on their own. I always wondered who planted the diamonds... I have a theory that I really like. It's not necessarily serious, but I still enjoy it. Ok, so in the game I play (Halo) there's an ancient alien race called the Forerunners. They were incredibly powerful and extremely high tech. They invented tons of technological marvels. But then, they noticed that the humans (extremely ancient humans, by our standards. Pre-historic, but still hundreds of years more advanced than us.) were spreading across the galaxy at an alarming rate. The Forerunners tried to stop them. With their superior tech, the Forerunners defeated the humans after a long grueling war. They sent us back to the Stone Age. Not long after the humans were defeated did the Forerunners realize their huge mistake. The humans weren't attacking or aggressively expanding, they were running. Trying to escape a parasitic, unnatural species that consumes everything in its path and cannot be stopped. The Flood. The flood feeds by infesting the bodies of any creature with sufficient biomass. The part that makes the flood so powerful, though, is their ability to control whatever body they infest. And, when they infest a host, they gain the memories and knowledge of that host. The flood have a hive mind, so, with every new victim infested, the entirety of the flood grow more intelligent. Flood can infect entire planets in a matter of days. Armies stand no chance against them, because if a single flood spore gets too close, they'll infest a host and immediately have a new fighter. Sometimes individual combat forms will continue fighting after seemingly being defeated. This is what makes the flood so scary. The Forerunners, after their war with the humans, stood no chance against the flood. It was a completely one sided battle. The leaders of the Forerunners developed machines to combat the flood. The Halo Array consisted (at first) of 12 large ring worlds scattered throughout the Milky Way. Six smaller, but far more powerful rings were built. At some point 11 of the rings were destroyed, and the remaining 7 were used as a last resort. See, the flood couldn't be destroyed. The only way to defeat them was to starve them. The Halo rings did just that. Together they could wipe out all organic sapient life in the galaxy, thus removing the flood's food source, and starving them into extinction. Individuals of every species in the galaxy (except the Forerunners) were placed on the Ark, outside the range of the Halo Array to repopulate the galaxy. Finally the Halo Array was fired, wiping out the flood and every other living being in the galaxy. Once the flood was gone, automated mechanisms returned the collected species to their respective homeworlds to repopulate the galaxy. Ok, now you know the history of Halo. Now here's how the diamonds fit in: I think the Forerunners planted the diamonds to help fight the flood. Seeing as how gems are made of hardlight (an invention of the Forerunners) they theoretically couldn't be infected by the flood because they don't have sufficient biomass. The have no biomass at all. They're not organic. They were the perfect way to fight the flood. Soldiers that couldn't be infected, and could fall and be reborn to keep on fighting. But these new perfect soldiers were taking a long time to come out the the ground they were planted in. And the flood threat was growing at a rate the Forerunners never anticipated. The diamond project was scrapped for the last ditch effort to built the Halo Array. You know what happened next. The Halo rings were fired, and Forerunners were wiped out. Now on a desolate, abandoned planet, three out of the four diamonds emerged from the ground. White diamond, yellow diamond, and blue diamond were alone together and confused. There was no one around to give them a purpose. With no flood left alive, they didn't even have a foe. They were left to explore their new Homeworld and uncover the mysteries of their missing creators. They didn't discover much, but they did learn how to create more gems. And thus the diamond authority was born. Now they're misguided with an insatiable crave to expand their territory to the surrounding galaxy. Gems invade planets, destroying the inhabitants, and using any and all nutrients in the ground to create more gems. Now they're almost as invasive as the flood once were.
And that's my theory. I really like the idea. It's obviously not true, but it's still a fun thing to think about.
