I open the glass door with a jingle. It's busy here today. There's a line of at least ten people at the counter. Midnight's grown quite popular as the best baker in town. "Joey!" I look to see Midnight at the register, taking the order from a young boy. She smiles and waves. I smile and walk up to her. "How are you?" She asks. "I'm great. What about you? You're quite busy today, I see." "I know. It's great." She turns to yell into the kitchen. "Three loaves of garlic bread!" "You have loaves of garlic bread?" "No, it's bread that's best suited to make garlic bread with." "Ah, I see." A man comes out of the kitchen with a bundle a brown paper, supposedly with bread inside. "Sandwich bread!" He calls. Someone comes from the waiting area and grabs the bundle. "Thank you." She says, then walks out. "Anyways. What can I get you?" Midnight asks. "Oh no. I'll wait in line like everyone else." I move to get in line. Someone in the line speaks up, however. "Please. Feel free, Protector. We can wait a little longer." He says. "Are you sure?" I ask. "Of course." Someone else says. "Ok, could I get a cherry pie?" "Coming up. That'll be $10." "Of course." I pull out my wallet and hand her a ten. I step back to wait for my pie to be baked.
