"Once upon a time, there was a massive civilization of humans that spanned the entire planet. They were split into countries and continents. But, you know that already, don't you?" Her voice echoes through the chamber, her face lit by the fire keeping them warm for the night. There's an excited spark in her eyes and it makes her audience just as excited to hear her story.
"But, what I bet you don't know about, is the Secret World of non-humans that existed all over the planet, right under the humans' noses. Vampires and werewolves and zombies and wizards." She points to a few in her group for emphasis, a werewolf and a necromancer.
"You mean, people like us were a secret?" A vampire asks, surprised. The story teller smiles.
"You bet. Anything other than humans, and even many of the animals you know today were a secret to just about everyone on the planet. Some crazies believed in aliens, but you guys hadn't come to our world yet and wouldn't for a very long time," She gestured to an alien, one of many of its kind and plenty others born on or visiting Earth.
"See, the people and creatures of the secret world were widespread but not nearly as plentiful as humans. They lived alone or in small groups. They had no cities, not like humans, and not like we do now." She stops and thinks for a moment, although it's all part of the story. "Well, except for one. It was called Endromidus." She says the name with an almost reverence.
"See, Endromidus was a place where everyone was welcome. Human, extra dimensional, Secret World, even angels." A few of her listeners murmur in surprise at her mention of angels. Everyone knows them, but it seems they're far more legend than they used to be.
"Endromidus was a safe haven for all, and its leader had a beautiful vision for its future. He had an impossible dream of peace and prosperity. Oh, how fragile our dreams can be..." Her voice turns wistful as she relieves many memories.
"There was a group of people who wanted quite the opposite. They wanted destruction for not just the planet, but for the entire dimension. They wanted to resurrect a being with the desire— and definitely enough power— to destroy the entire dimension. He was called Cthulhu. His followers, the Cthulians. The people of Endromidus and their leader, a valiant human by the name of Joey, made it their goal to stop these people and save the universe. You know the cliche." She smiles, but her eyes have grown sad with the memories.
"For a long time, they didn't have much to do. The Cthulians always seemed to be one step ahead. No matter what Joey did, they just kept gathering their ingredients for the massive spell it would take to revive their dead god."
Her listeners are on the edges of their seats. They've never heard this story before, and their leader is one of the best storytellers around. She seems to have thousands of them packed beneath those pretty blue locks of hers. The scars that mar her pale skin make for excellent proof that many of her stories are true. The haunted look that sometimes plagues her ruby red eyes often show off her true age and everything she's experienced. After all, Serena has been around since this started, so many thousands of years ago.
"But, they came out on top. Protector Joey and his Endromic Fighters and his remarkably gorgeous wife and Junior Protector, Serena Francine," She tosses her sky blue hair and smiles at the shocked look on her listeners' faces as they recognize their storyteller's name. "won the day. We defeated the Cthulians and stopped them from resurrecting Cthulhu. By coming together with countless other nations, some human, some of the Secret World, some from other dimensions, we were able to overcome their massive armies and save the universe!"
She ends her story with a dramatic raise of her voice, and it successfully riled up her listeners. They clap excitedly and bombard her with questions.
"What was Joey like?"
"What happened after that?"
"When did the Secret World stop being secret?"
"Who were the allies that came together to help?"
"How were you there?"
Serena smiles and raises her hands to quiet them, and her listeners obediently sit back. "Come on, guys. You know how this works. Be patient, and tomorrow night I'll tell you the story of the Fissure and how it became the mountain we reside in to this very day," She says. The excited looks of her listeners give her a sense of great satisfaction as she walks away to turn in for the night.
