"Good morning sleepy head."
"Cameron, go back to sleep..." "I'm tired." I smiled.
"Surprise bitch!" "It's me!" "Remember, Cam's true love?" Hannah cackled.
I sat up in a frenzy and kicked the comforter off of me.
"Oh look, Cam, she's panicking." "So cute." Hannah reached for my arm and dug her nails in. "Get up!"
I planted my feet on the floor as she dragged me out of the bed. "Hannah, why are you doing this?" "What could you possibly gain from torturing me?" "Haven't you stopped to think maybe Cam cares about me?"
"CARE ABOUT YOU??" "Haha, so funny." She turned to Cameron. "She thinks she's a comedian!" She turned back to face me and stuck one of her claws in my face. "Get a grip, no one cares about you."
I fought to wiggle out of Hannah's grip.
"I wouldn't fight so hard if I were you." "After all, you're not getting any food today."
"Monster!" I spat. I lunged for Hannah.
"Dad?" "Come tie her up so I can explain rule 3 to her."
Hannah's father came in and tied my hands behind my back.
"So, as I was going to say, rule 3: if you spend a night in Cam and I's bed, you spend a day and night in the closet."
"There isn't a closet I can fit in in this shed you call a house!"
"Oh trust me, I know!" "Dad, please lead her outside."
Hannah's dad grabbed my arm roughly and started leading me outside.
"Ok, so that building right there." She pointed to a small structure made entirely out of plywood. "That's the closet!" She waved cutely. "Hope you enjoy!" She pranced off towards the main house with Cameron in tow.
Hannah's dad threw me roughly into the closet and bolted the door. It was dark and hot and smelled like pine. I fumbled around the 4 foot by 4 foot building in search of anything that might help me break out. All I found was a single water bottle. The water inside was warm.
"Well here's to spending a day in hell!" I toasted my water bottle with an invisible person.
I tried to lay down on the plywood floor but the wood kept scratching my bare legs. I had hoped that Hannah would exchange my dirty leggings for a clean pair, but that obviously wasn't the case.
I laid there and cried a bit. I just wanted to have company. It was so quiet and lonely. I was left to let my mind wander. I laid there coming to the realization that even though I had a person who was riding this terror train with me, I was never going to be able to have someone to hold my hand through it. I Was Alone.
The day dragged and dragged. I finished my water bottle. My stomach growled so loud I couldn't sleep. I paced around the closet, needed a bathroom badly. I pounded my fists on the sides of the prison screaming for Cam, for my mom, for my friends. But there was no one there, no one was going to save me.
Eventually I was able to bust a hole the size of a pea in the wall and stared out it at the night sky. I looked out at the horizon begging for a car to pass by in the desert, but no such car ever passed by. I watched the moon move through the sky before eventually everything went dark. A part of hoped that that was the end.
That night in my dehydration fueled dreams I walked through that desert. I walked through it with Cam. We walked and walked and walked, cracking jokes and pretending we weren't dying of thirst. We walked and walked and somehow stumbled upon Vegas. Between visions of Cam's smile my head pounded with the bright neon lights, my ears rang with the sound of slot machines. Then it all went quiet and dark.
The next thing I knew, Cameron and I are sitting in a hot tub together.
I turned my head to look up at him. "Cameron, we're dead aren't we?"
He kissed my forehead. "We are, but its ok." "They say life's got nothing on death."
We sat there in that hot tub laughing, staring out at the Vegas lights until it all faded to darkness again.
"I can't breathe!" I sat up panting. I wiped the sweat from my face. I felt my surroundings. "The closet, right."
I looked out of my peep hole, it was light.
"Please let Hannah be coming back soon."
I sat back and laughed. I actually wanted to see Hannah. What a surprise.
